I'm having my 3rd c-section in 5 weeks and I was told when I had my GD test that my hemoglobin was 9.7 (low). I'm on 3 iron pills a day to get it back up but I've read and heard that it's very difficult to raise iron levels due to low absorbtion.
Anyway, I guess my question is...have any of you had a successful c-section and recovery even though you were considered anemic?
In my past pregnancies I've been considered "borderline" anemic, so this one is different.
Re: C-Section and Low Hemoglobin (anemia)?
I was pretty bad. I was like you but a bit lower. I believe I was about an 8 and was able to raise it to a high 9. I had a Csection and I'm a bleeder for some reason. I bled ALOT with my boys (vaginal births) and I bled alot again with this one. My hemoblobin dropped down to the 5-6 range. I wasn't symptamatic though meaning I wasn't weak/dizzy. They let me stay on iron instead of a blood transfusion for that reason. Had I become symptomatic they would have pushed the transfusion. The first couple weeks for rough as far as recovery. I would try to take a shower and just about pass out.
If you're not a bleeder and your uterus contracts correctly on it's own you should be just fine. My only suggestion is to start in with the stool softeners. I didn't know how bad I'd be constipated with the iron and the pain meds.
Thanks for your response and I will definitely take your suggestion on the stool softeners.
So we're you able to have a spinal or did you have to go under general?
It seems like you're feeling better, glad to hear it!
Take the iron supp together with vit C, the vit C help absorb the iron.
However, avoid taking the iron together with prenatal, if you can take iron in the morning and prenatal in the afternoon that's great.
I think the vit D will cancel the iron if you take them together or closer.
