Question about napping in crib

Maddy sleeps great in his crib at night. He even soothes himself to sleep. But during the day, if we put him in his crib for a nap, he won't go to sleep. He'll just play and talk to himself. My MIL, who watches him during the day, is wondering how we can try to transition him from napping on the couch (or in our arms), to napping in the crib. He takes great naps during the day, just NOT in the crib. What did ya'll do to help LO nap in the crib? She was wondering about letting him soothe himself to sleep with a "lovey", but I told her not to put anything in the crib with him. I told her I might be okay with it if she watched him on the monitor and then took the lovey out when he was asleep, but I could see getting caught up in doing something and forgetting to take it out.

Any ideas?

I rock her until she is almost asleep then put her in the crib. Of course her eyes pop wide open, but I give her a paci and rub her tummy for a few minutes until she settles back down. It is taking less and less time now to settle her down.

DD has only been in her crib this week so she's still adjusting, but this is what we did for naps before her crib, too. I know that never would've worked with DS. Every kid is different, but it's worth a shot!

I may get flamed, but I give DD her blankie (it's a small Carters one she likes) as well as her pacifier (this one is new, she used to hate pacifiers) and let her hug her blankie until she passes out.I'm a baby monitor stalker, so I let her sleep with her blankie.She usually just hugs it.Sometimes when she looks like she's about to fall asleep, I pat her butt gently which puts her to sleep.

Now, this is a baby who hardly slept as a newborn...she's a good napper now (hope I didn't jinx it).

This is pretty much the same as for us, except she won't take a paci. Also I have found that in the last week or so her naps have gotten more consistent so that I often don't even have to rock her, I just watch for her cues of being tired and lay her down. She fusses for a few minutes and then passes out. Maybe when you are putting him down he is not really tired and therefore not wanting to sleep? I let DD nap whenever she is tired, and she has made her own schedule, therefore she is always tired when she goes down.

This. I put her in her crib when she starts giving tired cues (yawns or rubs her eyes). She will talk herself to sleep or fuss for a few minutes. It's like a switch flipped in thevpast two weeks. Prior to then she would only nap on me.

Thanks ladies! Looks like we'll have to create a routine with tummy rubbin' and a binky (which he uses at bedtime anyway).
