Natural Birth

JUST PREGNANT and home birth wanted...

Hi,

My husband and I just found out we are pregnant. Super excited, but also really confused as to where to start. I am asking around to some friends for referals of midwives/doctors in my area (cincinnati,oh).

For those that had home births, did you also see a doctor for all of your exams? Or did your midwife do everything?

I am trying to track down if I need one/both and just where to start.

Sorry if this seems stupid, but this is our first and I feel clueless now that its actually real.

 Thanks!

  • There was a similar post a bit ago with some basic questions & answers covered:

I just saw my homebirth midwife for all my prenatal exams.  She did everything.

I did not do any concurrent care with an OB.  I think some people maybe do arrange for concurrent care, but it did not seem necessary to me, and my midwife said that typically people do not. I think the idea behind doing that is that if for some reason later in your pg or during labor you need to transfer to an OB's care you already have a relationship with that provider.

(Edited post to make link clicky, and to say congrats and welcome!)

I have a friend who is in the Cincinnati area, and recently had a homebirth. It's trickier there because midwives technically aren't allowed to attend homebirths, so you kinda have to "go underground" to find one.

She did do concurrent care with an OB throughout her entire pregnancy, I think because if she did need to transfer at any point (up to and including labor), she needed to have a "friendly" OB to go to. If she went to a random OB, she'd have to either say that she hadn't gotten any prenatal care, or risk getting her midwife in BIG trouble. Which are both sucky options.

I can probably put you in touch with her if you want. She had an awesome experience and I'm sure she'd be thrilled to talk about it Smile

If you're on Facebook, you might want to join the Cincinnati Homebirth Circle: https://www.facebook.com/CincinnatiHomebirthCircle

  • Before we decided on a home birth we were went to my OB. I wanted to see both at first. After I told them that I wanted to deliver at home, they wouldn't even see me. (which I totally understand. Illinois is not home birth friendly YET)  It was a blessing in disguise though. I loved that I only saw my midwife from week 14 on.

  • Dr. Bowen and Dr. Wall are OBGYNs that are supportive of homebirths with midwives.  They won't refer you to any midwives, but they'll be your backup.

I see them as well as my midwife each month for my standard appts.

I'll be having my home birth in September in Cincy.
