belly sleeping

Sh*t! We have had huge problems with Lily sleeping during the day. She only wants to sleep on us and she gets over-tired and fussy when she can't. It has started to crossover to the night. I have noticed she seems uncomfortable in her RnP and her PnP. She hates being swaddled, but if we don't she hits herself and wakes up. I talked to the pedi yesterday and she said its too early for separation anxiety. I started thinking and realized that when LO sleeps on us, she is on her belly. For the first time right now I put her on her belly in her PnP and she is sound asleep. WTH am I going to do now? Obviously she can't sleep this way at night. Err!!! Any advice?

Re: belly sleeping

  • I'm not saying you should continue to let her sleep on her belly, BUT, you might be surprised at the number of moms who let their LO's sleep like that. Seems like there was a post a while back and a good bit of moms admitted to it. My LO HATES being on her tummy, but my mom manages to get her to sleep that way when she's at their house. I don't love it but she does sleep better since she isn't waving her arms and kicking her legs all night, waking herself up. My mom also props her up on her side and she also seems to sleep better that way. She's leaning more towards her back so she doesn't fall forward. But that also seems to help with all of the moving. Maybe try that? Not sure if the side is equally unsafe as the tummy though.  =/

  • How light of a sleeper are you? How about you let her sleep on her belly in her RnP for an hour until she is sound asleep and gently lay her on her side? Maybe prop her to her side with a rolled up hand towel or something?

  • My DD sleeps on her tummy for her naps during the day - i just keep an eye on her. I dont worry about it, she sleeps WAY better that way. At night she sleeps on her side next to me in bed :)

  • I let me little guy sleep on his belly when he naps during the day and at night if he is really fussy.  He is right next to me in a bassinet and it is the only way he sleeps more than 2 hours.  I say if she likes it try it - think about it - we all slept on our bellys.
  • I let DS sleep on his belly for naps when I can watch him. At night, he's on his side in the RNP. At night, I have to put him down completely asleep or he'll fight it. I can't wait for him to be able to sleep on his belly at night!! It'll be a dream!! Pedi said yesterday that he can't be on his belly until "he rolls on his own to get himself there". I don't know if I'll wait that long though. When I'm confident that he's strong enough, I'll let him. He's getting good practice with naps though, which is good.

I agree with this. I alternate with tummy and back sleep but I notice that Brett sleeps better on his tummy indeed. But keep a careful eye.

Same here, then she'll roll over onto her back sometimes when she is done nursing. Last night she squirmed herself sideways and was sleeping on her back with her head near me and her feet up on her daddy's back lol
