My baby is 5 weeks old and has been EBF since day 1. I have not introduced any formula. I introduced a bottle with breast milk at week 3. DD would gag/choke when attempting to drink the bottle but would drink some of it. We would give a bottle of breast milk every other day or every third day when we needed to (DH likes to feed her). The problem is when we give the bottle she cries. She will drink some and then start screaming and the drink a little more and scream. She often doesn't even want to drink and will just cry and cry. I use the Avent bottles with the slow flow nipple. She also will only accept the soothies pacifier (no other pacifier) and doesn't always take it. I am planning to breastfeed till she is 1 year old and not ever give her formula... however, I would like the option of giving her expressed breast milk so DH and I can take turns on feedings. She is just rejecting the bottle and the pacifier. Any tips?
Re: EBF baby rejecting bottle/pacifier
This is pretty common I think. EBF babies not taking the bottle. My DS1 was this way, and we haven't tried the bottle with DS2 yet - I'm not holding out hope, urgh. Also, almost ALL of my IRL friends who EBF had this same problem. It's frustrating.
My only suggestion is to try different bottles and nipples, and keep.trying. And keep away from her and let DH do the feeding - she will want the real thing if you're around:)
My DS has taken pumped milk without issue in a bottle since he was a few days old. I'm in the same boat in that DH likes to feed him too. I mean, he clearly prefers the boob because he always grimaces a bit when I first put the bottle in his mouth, but he always drinks without issue. And we have no nipple confusion because he readily takes the boob.
Maybe give another kind of bottle a try? We are using the Medela Calma bottles because they are supposed to eliminate nipple confusion and they simulate breast feeding (nipple is larger and baby has to suck). Your DD might just be hating the bottles.
My kid won't take a pacifier either. Well, we have only tried once (and it was the Soothie we tried) but he was not impressed and would spit it out and suck his fingers.
dd2 only takes the paci when she wants to, different from her sister who wanted it often.
Have you tried the mOmma bottles by Lansinoh? right now they are the only ones Hannah will take and they are a lot like a nipple
I completely understand that YH wants to help feed your LO. MH takes a feeding every night, and it's great for both of us. When LO was really little, he would take a slow flow nipple fairly well. But after a month, it became torture to give him a bottle. He would scream the entire time and shake his head no while drinking. It was horrible to watch him scream, then suck a little, scream, suck, shake head, suck, etc. We tried Dr Brown's bottles and the Playtex drop-ins. He screamed the same for both. He was also only drinking 2 ounces from the bottle, which I know he gets more than that from me.
So, we thought he might have to work harder for a slow flow nipple, since I have a fairly fast letdown. Since he's working harder, he's too tired to try to finish more than 2 ounces. I didn't want to make a bottle easier than the breast, but it was getting to a point that it wasted everyone's time. DH was frustrated from all of the screaming, and I was frustrated because LO wouldn't fill up and would be hungry 1 or 2 hours later. And since I have to go back to work soon, I needed to know there was a solution before then. We went with a Level 2 on Dr Browns and a medium flow on the Playtex, and now, he eats 3 ounces without screaming. He absolutely still prefers the breast, but it's so nice to be able to give him away for one feeding! Plus, now I know that when I go to work, eating won't be a complete battle for him. Good luck!

Yup, Peyton doesn't take a bottle when I am around. And me trying to give her the bottle is a joke! She likes the real thing. However, switching from Playtex Ventaire, to Tommee Tippee bottles eliminated her screaming fits. You just have to find what your LO likes. And our course, they can never like what you already have/bought
Haha.
like everyone else suggested, I'd try different brands of bottles. DS was drinking the medela (ones that came with the pump), dr. browns and born free way too quickly. I was afraid he wouldnt want to BF if the bottle was so easy
Someone recommended I get the breastflow bottles (from amazon) and he eats on it just like he nurses. it's working great for us.
it's really just trial and error but i try to give 1 pumped bottle a day (I won't give it- I make DH)
