Breastfeeding

LO is 3 weeks old and...

My nipples are still killing me.  No matter that I have a prescription nipple cream, they are still bleeding.

I hate breastfeeding!  I'm doing it because it's best for DD but I'm really not enjoying it.

How long does the pain last?  I'm so ready to throw in the towel but I know I'll hate myself if I stop.  Advice??

  • It sounds like you still need to fix that latch.  Your nipples should never bleed.  Bleeding is a sign that the baby is getting right on that nipple and ick ouch that isn't good for it and you can seriously damage them.

I'm not sure where you are located but if there are any walk in breastfeeding clinics, contact to find out their hours and go or find a LC and see if you can get her to work on your latch.

It gets better, once the latch is fixed you will be happy and pain free.

  • Are you using Lanolin?  With my first i had this problem for 4 weeks, until discovering I was majorly allergic to Lanolin!
  • I second the thought that you need to fix your latch. My daughter is a little over 2 weeks and I got the busted/bleeding nipples the first few days and now we have a better latch and it only hurts when she first latches on and when my milk lets down.

  • Hang in there!  I had major pain on one side until 8 weeks, but then it seemed like it went away overnight.  I was seeing a LC and we figured out that my nipple on the one side pointed off in a funny direction so when I was bringing LO to breast I wasn't using the right angle.  Try re-positioning LO's head to be right on with the angle your nipple points.  Just know that it WILL go away eventually!  I also said many times how much I hated BFing, but now that I am starting to partially wean in preparation for returning to work (will be just BFing in mornings/evenings), I am so sad.  Truly sad.  It becomes such an amazing bonding experience with your LO so hang in there and get some help from a LC!  :)

  • I think you need to talk to an LC and maybe try the nipple shields if you haven't already. Oh sweetie, I don't know if I would have stuck it out through bleeding nipples.

Sounds like a poor latch.. I would definelty ask for help... seek out another mom who BF, a LC, anyone... don't keep suffering.  Once you the latch right it is so nice. Until then... try the medela cool pads (they have some sort of magical medicine) and they make sore nipples feel soooo much better.

  • Have you tried hydrogel pads?  DS is also 3 weeks old and my nipples are so sore!  My nipples haven't bled, but I have had a lot of pain.  I ordered Ameda ComfortGel pads from Amazon and they just got here today (I made sure to use 2 day shipping- I couldn't wait!).  I've been using them all afternoon/evening, and I can already feel a big difference.  I put them in the fridge while nursing and then when I'm done nursing, I put on APNO (Newman's Nipple Cream) and put the gel pads back on.  It seems to be a winning combination!  Also, make sure you are using the APNO after each feeding.  I wasn't until recently, and it really helps.  Hope this helps!
  • My cracked, bleeding nipples healed around the 4 week mark. I never ended up seeing a LC, just kept trying to fix the latch on my own. Stuffing more of your breast into baby's mouth and supporting your breast tissue throughout feeding really helped. Also don't let your nipples absorb too much water in the shower. I covered mine for a few days to give them a better chance to heal.

  • I just wanted to commiserate. Everyone says its the latch but I have been to 2 Lcs and a LLLL mtg and everyone says the latch is fine. I have heard that sometimes it just sucks for 6-8 weeks and then it starts to feel better. If you haven't looked into latch problems, by all means do that. But I just wanted to let you know it's not always the latch.

  • Thanks everyone so much for the support/advice.

I didn't do very much research when I decided to BF so could someone please educate me on what a nipple shield is for.
