slings/carries?

I currently have a baby bjorn that I got as a baby present for DS #1. I used it a few times forward facing when he was about 3 to 6 mo old. Now with the new LO on his way I am thinking a sling/carrier would be used a lot more since I constantly am running after or doing things with DS.

I saw on Etsy the lovey duds carrier and really like the look of it, but think that I would only use it when LO is tiny. Would it just make more sense to try the baby bjorn that I already have versus spending another $50 for this carrier?

Re: slings/carries?

  • That looks a lot like a Moby, which I loved with DS1 because it really freed up my hands. That said it's kind of hard to wrap. Someone recommended the k'tan (https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Ktan-Carrier-Black-Small/dp/B000UYFULU/ref=br_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2V1EE9TNES5ID&colid=1HKX9ZIKN3JXK) as like a Moby but eaiser to use so I'm going to try that.

  • That seems to be made from a stretchy fabric, like the moby, so it would only be good until about 15 lbs.  If your interested in using a wrap, for a longer period you'll want to look for a woven wrap.   Otherwise I'd look for a good ring sling.   Paxbaby.com has quite a few videos on how to use a ring sling and different carries and I'm considering getting a ring sling now.  I'm not a fan of the Bjorn, but I love my Becco Butterfly carrier.   It comest with the newborn insert and goes up to 45lbs.  It has a hip strap so all the baby's weight isn't carried on your shoulders but distributed between hips and back.  You can't forward face the baby but you can do a front and back carry with it.   We went to Europe last spring, when DS was 1 and used it all over the place and we occasionally still use while I've been pregnant.   It's pricey at $120 but we've gotten our money's worth out of it. var fctb_tool=null; function i8FIPXlgLb30(t) { fctb_tool=t; start(fctb_tool); }
  • That is a mei tai, and is a much healthier carrier for your LO than the Baby Bjorn. A Bjorn puts all the baby's weight in their crotch and is very bad for hip development, not to mention for baby's back, and its' much more uncomfortable for you! A carrier like the one in the link distributes the weight appropriately throughout their butt and thighs and is much more developmentally appropriate. If you're going to be spending lots of time wearing baby, I'd definitely get a new carrier!

    That said, I might look for one that is not made of a stretchy fabric, since, as a PP said, I feel like it would last better as baby gets heavier. If you google "mei tai" you should find a million of them available. You can also get an Ergo or a Beco carrier, both of which have buckles instead of tying like the mei tai, but are good for baby's development like the mei tai. They're a bit more expensive, but I stalked craigslist and got a good deal, $50 for my Beco.

    Good luck!
