? about hand, foot & mouth disease...

My 5 week old seems to have this.  My almost-3yr old does attend preschool, but shows no signs or symptoms.  Could he still have given it to her?  I called our Pedi, and he tried to tell me it's heat rash - there is NO RASH on her torso, back, neck, or in the folds near her groin, armpits, etc. Not to mention, I have BARELY had her out at all.  The red blister-like bumps just suddenly showed up on her face, feet, and palms - and they're very angry looking.  Nothing yet in her mouth, and she's nursing OK so far.

Anyone have experience with this in a newborn, and can you tell me how long before it runs its course?   She does have a Dr. appt in 2 days so I expect by then the Doc will agree that's what this is, but - should I be doing anything in particular for her to treat this other than keeping her and my toddler apart??

 Any help appreciated.  Thx!!!

Re: ? about hand, foot & mouth disease...

  • P had HFM when he was almost a year - so he was a lot older than your little one. There isn't anything they did to treat the illness. We just gave Advil/Tylenol for the pain. For us, HFM started with a high fever (103.5) before the rash developed. The fever went away as the rash flared. FWIW, he did have a rash on his stomach and chest as well as his hands, feet, and mouth. The diagnosis was confirmed by the pedi though so I am sure that is what he had. P was in a ton of pain. He was up all night because his mouth hurt so much, but he could hardly cry because even that hurt. It was horrible. I hope it's not what your 5 week old has and that your LO feels better soon!!!
