Food Allergy

What is going on with all these allergies/MSPI?!?!

To preface, I know that my question is somewhat pointless because there is no answer...I just feel like getting all my thoughts out there.

It seems like more and more babies are having sensitivies, MSPI, or allergies to breast milk.  What gives?!  When my first DD was born, I started hearing of a few cases, but now it seems like a lot the mothers I talk to are dealing with some form of sensitivity in their breast-fed baby.  I dont know if it's just that my awareness is growing or that there actually is an increase of allergies.  My mom said that she doesn't remember any babies that had these issues when I was born (back in the 80's).  It kind of freaks me out if I sit and think about it too much.  What is causing all of this?  Will it get worse?  What does the future look like for our sensitive infants?

Like I said, there's no clear answers.  I'm just frustrated today.

I share your frustration, but I do think that at least part of it is a lot more awareness and understanding.  Years ago, my son would have quietly died of "failure to thrive" and everyone would have shaken their heads and said that it's such a shame.  Today, he has an amazing care team at CHOP, a feeding tube, and an entirely elemental diet - and boy is he ever thriving :)

  • i think it still existed but was just labeled colic & mothers were more accepting of it. i think now, parents are more educated & demand answers when something is wrong & this is what comes of it.
  • I wonder this too. It seems like part of it is awareness, but when I was a kid, no one in my class was allergic to anything.  Now they have to have separate "allergen free" tables in lunch rooms in many school because of dangerous allergies.  It really baffles me.

  • I am pretty sure I have always been MSPI myself, but the increase in life-threatening allergies is staggering.  SO very sad.  I am sure that I am not alone in my constant second-guessing of food choices, etc.

Yep!  DD was crying after every feed/ bottle and we chucked it up to gas/ colic - thinking she will grow out of it.  I even mentioned it to the pediatrician and all she said was "this is a difficult age - but she will grow out of it".  Now I realize my baby was secretly suffering.
