VBAC

Past my due date and need some encouragement...

Hi All,

I mostly lurk and respond to posts here and there so I'm sorry if most of you don't "know" me but I'm at 40 weeks 3 days with this pregnancy and feel myself hitting the wall emotionally.  A little background, this is my third birth.  My first was an induction at 41 weeks 3 days that went well and ended in a vaginal birth, my second was a SROM at 38 weeks, labor didn't start for several hours and I ended up with a CS due to fetal distress about 20 hours later.

I have a fantastic doctor who has no deadlines (barring any medical concerns - which there aren't any at this point) who keeps telling me that "the best VBACs happen on their own."  He is truly amazing and calm and is looking at this birth as a completely natural and safe event, which is truly a blessing in this day and age.  I had complete faith in my decision to VBAC for months now.  Of course, now that I'm past my due date I'm getting tons of comments from people about how my doctor won't "let" me go much longer, how VBACs are dangerous, and that I need to just throw in the towel and get this baby out.  It is driving me insane and I'm starting to lose my resolve - I waiver between just smiling and nodding when people start up on it and wanting to jump up on my soap box and give them a piece of my mind.  But the worst part is that no matter how much I believe that this is the best decision, I really am starting waiver.  It's hard to keep believing that I'm doing the best thing for me and baby when there are so many people who apparently disagree.

Uhg, I'm not sure the point of this post other than to vent and maybe get some encouragement from other moms who have been down this road before.  At the very least, thanks for reading this!

  • Hang in there!  If your first was born at 41wks3dys, then this one might be a few days away too.

So many of these people, with all these opinions, have no idea what they are talking about.  They just think faster and sooner is better.  If your doctor is ok with waiting and you're being monitored, then I'd go with his recommendations.

  • I don't know where people get the idea that your due date is the same as an expiration date. It merely represents the average gestational period. Your doctor sounds wonderful. Let your body do its thing and don't pay any attention to these other people who clearly have no clue what they're talking about and don't have the grace to keep their mouths shut.

My DD was born 6 days "late" and was only 5 lbs 15 oz, but completely healthy. I refused any form of induction, and I'm so glad I did because If she had been born a week earlier she may have been an unhealthy weight. My body knew she wasn't ready yet. The fact that I was 6 days past due had nothing to do with the fact that I ended up with an emergency c-section.

Just because this is a VBAC for you doesn't make any difference in whether or not your body should be allowed to do its thing (unless, as you said, there are complications of some sort). Stay strong! Don't listen to everyone else. For all you know you could go into labor three hours from now.

  • I went to 41 weeks and was induced and had a successful vbac. Anything is possible! Keep an open mind.
