Generic v. name brand formula

We are considering buying the Sam's Club brand of formula.  The label is exactly the same as the name brands.  Has anyone had experience with a generic version of formula?  Is there any reason not to use it?  We used Enfamil with DS1 but most of our friends used generic.  TIA

Re: Generic v. name brand formula

  • We use the Sam's Club version of Gentlease and we haven't had any problems at all! We asked our pediatrician first before we switched to the Sam's brand to see what her opinion was and she said most of the parents in her practice use store brand formulas and that there is no difference. It costs about half what Enfamil does so I say go for it!

  • To put your mind at ease, all formula has to meet the same FDA standards for safety and nutrition.  The only difference is the binding agent.  So, just like Enfamil and Similac aren't identical, generics won't be identical to anything else either but it's all perfectly safe.

WE went from enfamil gentlease to sams club gentle this week. It was miserable and baby had constipation, gas and was so fussy. I dont get it since its says ingredients are practically the same but there must be something different. We will be switvhing back to enfamil. Just be wary!

  • When we had to supplement with #1, at first we used Enfamil.  Then, after a while, we switched to the Target brand.  It was the same and we had no issues with LO drinking it.  It saved us a good amount of money by using generic.

with my DS, we switched to Target Brand version of Similac.  He ended up constipated and so we switched back.

  • My son was given Similac Advance while he was in the hospital. Before he was discharged from the NICU I did a lot of research of store brands vs. Similac Advance and we ended up going with Kirkland Infant formula (Costco's brand). It ended up being about $.50/oz vs Similac's $1.15/oz (which I found was the average amongst several different retailers around here). We've been giving him the Kirkland brand since we brought him home. It gave him a little bit of gas at first, but nothing that really bothered him that much. Overall, he tolerates it just as well as he did the Similac.
