Food Allergy

thoughts on hereditary factor?

hi - i dont usually come in here but was looking for some input.

my son, who is 3 now, developed the milk protein intolerance while being breastfed at 4 months of age.  we switched to the alimentum (sp),   he outgrew it at 10 months and was on reg formula.

i just had twins and am ebfing them and am anxious about the milk protein intolerance happening again.  my doctor said that there was a 5% chance....has anyone had one child develop this and not the other?

Re: thoughts on hereditary factor?

  • Im allergic to bananas, Jacob is allergic to dairy eggs and peanuts and James is allergic to peas, so there is definitely some kinda genetic thing going on there!! HOWEVER, I also have lyme disease and have had it for 8 years, so thats a good reason why my kids are so jacked up :(

(BTW, i didnt find out until this past December, so its not like I knowing had kids while having a massive infection eating away at my insides..i just like to mention that last part JIC anyone gives me the side eye..)

  • I have two children - DD is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, sesame (although that's borderline; one test said positive, one said negative), as well as various environmental allergies and tree pollens.  DS - not a single allergy.  We have no history of allergies in the family.

Hmm. I think things can be genetic but I don't know to what degree. Here is our family...

DH- allergic to preservatives in some meats (ham, pepperoni)

Me- allergic to most stinging/biting insects, molds, pollen, dust, iodine, latex, shellfish, avocado, some nuts, several antibiotics, many red dyes, morphine (and LI)

    DS- apples, amoxicillan (and LI)

This doesn't relate to the OP, but I just wanted to say no one should give you the side eye for having kids...even if you knew you had lyme disease.  :)

  • I have always heard that they really don't know. Big surprise there. Having allergies in the family makes you predisposed to developing allergies, but there are so many possible things that affect it, you may get them or may not. I have read other studies that say it has to do with the mother's hormones during pregnancy. Since you have already gone through this once, I would just keep an eye out, but I wouldn't drive yourself crazy. Good Luck.
