Moby wrap???

So I used the Baby Bjorn with my other two daughters, but a friend of mine lent me her moby wrap.  Well I tried tying it on me this weekend, boy is it complicated.  Not sure if I am doing it wrong of if it is my pregnant belly getting in the way.  Anyone else use the Moby in the past?  If so did you like it, and how long did it take you to get used to using it?  Which wrap did you like better the folded or gathered?

  • I loved this for my son, just because, no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't find a carrier that didn't cut off the circulation to his legs!  I like the gathered, and it didn't take too long to get the hang of it.  Maybe a 15 minute session putting him in and out and figuring out where it needed to be tied tighter and where he was tucked in most securely.  Only problem I had with the carrier was that if I wore it walking around the house with him in it for a really long time, it started to droop a bit and I had to retie it.  But he seemed comfy as he could be and I was so glad to be able to use my hands I didn't mind!!!  When we first got the wrap we tried it out on our cat....he didn't care for it.  LOL

  • i LOVED the moby with my son and plan to use it for this baby too. but i would definitely think tying it with a pregnant belly would be even harder than without.  it takes a few times but i got the hang of it fast.  it was interesting to see how little fabric i was left with to tie right after i had DS and my tummy was still puffy, then later as my tummy went down i had even longer ends to wrap around.

i would just wait til your baby is here and give it a shot. once you get used to it it doesn't take long to get it on. GL!

also...not sure if i know what you mean by folded or gathered, but mine was folded in half lengthwise before wrapping around me.

  • The Moby Wrap is not ment to be used with bigger children. It is better to use it with smaller (newborn) children. That being said I have used it and I do not like it for regular use. We used it with DD until she was about 3-4 months old and then stopped. I rarely used it though.

There are a ton of youtube videos on how to tie the wrap. Look at those try a few out and see what works best for you.

  • I bought a moby wrap for when this LO gets here I have tried it on a couple of times to get the hang of it. It might look confusing, but by the second time doing it i found it pretty straight forward and easy. I can't wait to use it with the baby

  • I didn't have a moby with DD1 but I just bought one for this baby. One thing that you mentioned was tying it around your pregnant belly. I too am having a hard time because of my belly (to practice before DD2 gets here). Especially since it says to start at belly button level. I figure once I am no longer pregnant, it will be a little easier.

Good luck and I agree there are a lot of great tutorials on youtube.

  • I did not like the Moby for that reason--it's ridiculously complicated. Plus, you can't put it on when you are out of the home because the ends drag on the ground! It was never comfortable for me. I highly recommend the Baby K'Tan--it's the same theory as the Moby but it's sewn together in two loops so its a million times easier to put on/adjust/travel with etc. I LOVE my K'Tan, I think it blows the Moby out of the water.

  • I prefer the folded method and yes, it'll be easier w/out the belly.  Like PP said - check out youtube to get a better picture of how it's supposed to be.

  • I loved my moby, and used it until my baby wsa 6 months old at least. For longer carries at that age I used my Beco, but the moby was great for the airport and on the airplane (after take off, as they usually make you take them out).

Yes, there is a learning curve, but as others said, watch some youtube videos. Once you do it once or twice it becomes old hat. I loved that I could put it on at home and then run errands, popping baby in and out. There was no dragging fabric in the parking lot, because I already had it on. T loved it, and I hope this baby does too.

  • I loved mine with DD2.  It didn't take too long to be able to do it without looking at the book.  Maybe 2 or 3 times of the newborn hold.  I can't imagine how you're doing it with your belly in the way...ha!  I can definitely see where that would make it more difficult.

And, just a little tip:  don't dry it in the dryer!  I'm not even sure what the instructions say, but don't put it in the dryer!  Let it air dry!  If the fabric shrinks much it makes it even more difficult....ha!

  • Hated the Moby, and so did DD. If it was even the tiniest bit too loose, it would slowly slide down my frame...if I tightened it, it cut off circulation to DD's legs (she didn't like the lotus holds...or having her arms and legs tucked in).

  • i recommend the baby k'tan carrier. way easier than the moby. the moby was a hassle - even after i figured it out, i still hated having to wrap it every time i wanted to put it on. the k'tan does the same thing, but is much easier to use.

I hated the moby, and so did my son...he loved the baby bjorn though! I learned how to use the moby by watching youtube videos.

  • I adore wrapping! The learning curve is steeper than other carriers, but wraps are just so comfy. Now, I will say that I use woven wraps (which are not stretchy and can be used for front, back, and hip carries from NB to child and don't have a weight/comfort max like a Moby does), but I initially used a Moby when DS was born. It was hard  to practice with the belly in that PG, and I cannot front-wrap DS in this PG because of the belly. But, I did watch the videos on the Moby site and practiced anyway during PG so that when the time for baby came, I would be ready. I wrapped DS for the first time at about 30h old. There also are lots of You Tube videos. Wrapping is like tying your shoelaces--at one point it was impossible and now it is second nature. The benefit of a wrap over a K'tan is that you get a genuinely custom fit for you and baby every time and can make sure that baby is high enough to kiss his head. Sometimes with pre-sized things, there is a trade-off with proper fit.
