I need a job, but...

No one wants to hire me since I'm obviously preggo.  I've been trying to come up with ideas of what I can do from home or even part-time, but nothing seems to be working out.  It's really quite frustrating.  Anyone else going through this or have any suggestions?!?

Re: I need a job, but...

  • Ditto. Going through exactly this. Makes me sad that dh is having to do do much.

  • I'm a former teacher, so I thought of substitute teaching.  It takes a little effort to get started (fingerprints, background check, etc.), but once you are confirmed, you can usually get plenty of work.  A good thing is that the days are flexible, so you could easily stop subbing after the baby is born and then resume work later.  I know that it is getting late in the school year now, but you could go ahead and get things lined up for fall.  Good luck!

  • Just to clarify I have a job now as a part time teacher but I need summer income desperately since I don't getPaid over summer and wont be starting the year in the fall :(

  • same here.  I graduate with my master's in school counseling in a week, and I had to stop working, living off of savings, for the last 8 months I did my internship in.

This LO jumped the gun by appearing about 6 months before we were considering starting to try, so being pregnant removes a LOT of my options for job-searching now.

My DH is actively looking for a new, higher-paying job to help with some of the increased costs that will happen between part-time daycare, and me only working part-time.

  • In that case,  have you considered any day camps for students this summer.  My husband is a teacher too, and he worked at a day-camp for children with special needs last summer.  Another idea might be tutoring at Sylvan or another learning center.  A third idea might be a daycare that will have extra older children during the summer.

  • Are you in a metropolitan area? Whenever I am between jobs, I join a temp agency and tell them I am looking for longer term assignments. That means a solid week at one place or longer. The last time I did it, I was filling in for someone on maternity leave so I was there for a solid two months. Worked out great for me.

The only thing they ask of you at the beginning is a basic background check to make sure you are not a wanted criminal and you usually have to complete a basic computer test since most temp work is secretarial. Hope you find something.

  • I'm in the same boat.  I have been at my job for 4 years.  In December, I was told that a supervisory position would be opening up, and that I was up for a promotion.  (My supervisor got demoted- he sucked.) It took a few months to get him out of position, but in March, we were free and clear.

All of a sudden, our district office said our company was freezing all movement within the company, and we were put under a hiring "pause".  The earliest it looks like it's going to open is mid-June.

I have been assured that the position is still mine, (as long as it doesn't get eliminated when we undergo our operating model changes), but in the mean time, I'm out of luck.  The pay difference is about $15,000, which I NEED in order to remain at my current job.  Otherwise, I would have to look elsewhere for a position that pays more.  I am really mad.  If they hadn't strung me along since early December, I could have been in another position by now, but at this point, nobody is going to hire me 5 months pregnant.  I have no advice, but I hear you.  It sucks. :-/

  • I've recently started crafting. I'm thinking of opening my own Etsy shop. Do you have a special talent or hobby that you could make $$ from?

The only problem with subbing is that once lo gets here you'll need childcare. I priced childcare centers around here for their drop off rates...it's $75 a day, and here a sub only makes $85 a day. If you have family close by that would be willing to watch lo it could work.

  • I am having the same issues.  I have talked to all the temp agencies and none of them have any openings.  On top of that I have a BA in psychology so half the places I apply to tell me I am over qualified and then I also get told I am under qualified.  I have been kicking around the idea of babysitting or maybe trying to start a cake business out of my house.

  • These are all really good ideas, ladies.  Thanks!  I have several temp agencies looking for me, but they are mostly searching for jobs in my field.  I'm going to contact them and let them know that I would be interested in even just general office/admin work as well - just something to get me through until the LO comes.  I hadn't thought about the day camp/daycare option either... although I don't know how well I would do with that down south here during the HOT summer :)  And I was thinking about looking into teaching next year, although I don't have teaching credentials and most school systems around here require it.  We shall see... I do appreciate the input, just trying to keep my chin up and keep from blowing through ALL of my savings.
  • I have been searching for about a month. I've put out about 50 resumes (I live in smaller town so there isn't a lot of options) and I've only heard back from Mcdonald's. Now I told them I am pregnant and they didn't hire me. Discrimination for sure but that's a whole other story. As I was reading your post I got a phone call for a job interview tomorrow and I am not telling them I'm pregnant. I'm 21 weeks and I'm starting to pop but I can still get away with hiding it in the right clothing.

My suggestions would be don't tell them and hide your bump the best you can.

  • Also, I've applied for jobs like Mcdonald's because I thought it would be simple, fast, local and flexible. It was my "fall back job". It is just so hard getting a job when your pregnant.

  • As a teacher I do the summer camp thing (kinda)

I tutor and work one-on-one with a 16 yr old that is on the spectrum... its "CAP" work but its super fun and alot of families need ppl for the summer! so contact the YMCA, any other local summer camps or any SPED teachers that might know families that need help over the summer!

  • I'm getting a summer nanny job since I don't teach in summer and I plan to put it all in savings. My school is closing so I don't have a job for next year. I wont worry about working until January then I will probably sub and nanny part time. If we move in march like we are hoping to I want to open my own preschool.

  • I just finished my school counseling program. This pregnancy was a surprise since I was on BC. I def wanted to get started with my career before having any children. But plans have change and its hard to find a job when you are pregnant because they dont want to hire you and replace you later... I am currently subbing and this will only continue till the 1st week of June. If anything I plan on continuing in August and hopefully my boyfriend can take night classes.
