2nd Trimester

The pants are getting tighter...

When did y'all have to start wearing maternity pants? A co-worker of mine is 17 weeks and she can still wear her regular jeans (we're about the same size, pre-pregnancy.) I'm only 14 weeks today and have already had to use the hair tie on my jeans for about a week. I've only gained 3 pounds, but does this mean I'm going to be huge? I'm a little afraid!

Re: The pants are getting tighter...

  • For me the first time around I was almost 12 weeks, this time I think my thighs remembered what to do immediately, lol! I was in yoga pants by 6 or 8 weeks and full on in maternity pants around 8 or 10 weeks. My muffin top was more of an oversized cupcake top before they got uncomfortable b/c of my growing uterus Embarrassed.

ETA: I also have only gained 4lbs up to this point. Whereas last time I think at this point was at least 5 or 10 so I don't think the # on the scale matters when it comes to rate of expansion. Just make healthy choices and exercise and your body will do what it will do. I think all together last time I gained 29lbs as of the last appt before delivery.

  • With DS, I was so excited about being pregnant that I started wearing maternity clothes WAY before I needed to - I was wearing them by 8-10w, but probably could have waited until 16+ weeks before really needing them.  This time, I was able to hold out until almost 13w, but when I switched over, I really needed to.  I was only able to go that long because I still had all of my post-partum work pants from when DS was born, which were a size or two bigger than I actually wore when I found out I was pg this time, so they bought me some time.

I am almost 23 weeks now and finally caved and bought three maternity items two weeks ago (a pair of jeans, a pair of capris, and a pair of shorts).  I have been in them (and two pairs of yoga pants at home) since.

Though I was in my baggy pants teaching from about 12-18 weeks, I only had 2 pairs of pants I could from that point until 21 weeks and it was a TIGHT squeeze.

  • I have maternity tops that I have been wearing. I am 20 weeks now. I am still wearing my regular jeans but I don't button them, I bought a belly band from Target so that i could still wear them cause I'm not super huge! Plus I don't want to buy maternity pants until i'm bigger cause I want to wait to get ones that will last until I have the baby. So sweats, yoga pants, and my belly band has been AWESOME!!

And with the weight everyone is different with the weight and if you eat healthy and excersise after your LO is born you will lose the weight faster. That is what my SIL is doing and her DD was just born a couple weeks ago and she has already lost 24 pounds just by breast feeding and walking.

  • Everyone's different. This is my first baby and was 13-14 weeks. Personally, I love maternity clothes. They felt so much better than regular clothes!

With the bella bands, do you still have to zip your pants up? I'm having a hard time doing that, too. Must be carrying low?!

  • I'm a first time mom, 5'10", thin with a long torso, and I had to start using the rubber-band/bella band at 10 weeks and maternity pants at 14.  I think I started unbuttoning a little when I was alone in the car at 8 weeks for comfort.  I didn't really start showing much until 18 weeks, and I'm carrying a little high, so I just think everyone's body is different and adjusts differently to pregnancy.

  • I am 23 weeks and just went out and bought a few maternity shorts this weekend. My pants got too snug in the last few days.

I was 14 wks and up 8 lbs
  • It doesn't mean that you are going to be huge!  3 pounds is a reasonable amount of weight.  Every woman carries differently and it mostly depends on your body type.  I am also 14 weeks and I just started to use the hair tie this week too.  I can still button them, but I am more comfortable with the hair tie.  I am definitely on the verge of maternity clothes.  I wouldn't put too much stress into it at all.  Stop worrying about what your co-worker is doing and embrace the comfy clothes.  There is no sense in making yourself uncomfortable if you don't have too!
  • It also depends on where you are carrying and where the pants hit.  I still have some regular pants I can wear as they have a lower rise, but for the most part I have moved more into maternity pants or items with some stretch.  Just because the way you are carrying is making your pants not fit doesn't mean you are going to be huge....espeically if you have only gained 3 pounds so far!

I'm 18 weeks and have been wearing my belly band for about 2 weeks.  At first I just was unbuttoning my pants but now have lowered the zipper a bit because it is much more comfortable.  I think I am carrying low too.  I am only about 5'2" so a lot of my shirts are shorter.  I found the key is finding longer tops to wear to cover the band and my unzipped pants.  Good luck!

This is my first but I was in maternity pants about 14-15ish weeks.I can't remember actually. I felt more bloated than anything. Not pregnant. I had no m/s just super tired. I'm in full blown maternity pants now and I'm ok with it. Each woman and pregnancy is different! Some of my friends HATE maternity pants...I on the other hand, LOVE them! To each is own and as long as your comfy who cares. Btw, I'm 22 weeks and not "huge" but I'm definately pregnant.  People think I'm a few weeks behind when I tell them how far along I am...and baby is measuring perfectly on time!

I can't zip most of my pants already and I have to wear a Bella Band so low that it looks ridiculous when I can't zip my pants.  I haven't been brave enough to wear the band at work because I'm nervous the band would shift up and my unzipped fly would be on full display.

I haven't worn any maternity clothes yet but am rotating between the 3 pairs of pants that still zip.

  • I'll be 15w in a few days and I've been using Bella bands for the last 2 weeks.  I'm 5'2" so there's not that much room for the bump to go except out.  I only wear pants that I can either zip all the way up or at least half-way up... don't feel comfortable wearing pants that I can't zip at all!

I put the band on FIRST, then put the pants on, and fold the top half of the band down over the pants.  The band feels very snug & secure that way and i haven't had any trouble with the band shifting or rollling up/down.  The only problem is that most of my tops hit just below the waist som they don't cover the band entirely.  But I just pretend that the band is the bottom of a camisole I wear underneath the band.
