I think this is one study and the vast majority of studies do not show a significant increase.
Also, as the study points out, when there were controls for parental age, the statistics look different. I think IVF patients are inherently at higher risk to have babies w/ birth defects simply b/c many IVF patients seek treatment because their IF is age-related. Women in the same age group who do not use IVF probably have simliar risks.

Surprise BFP - Jack born April 28, 2013 via VBAC after PTL at 33 1/2 weeks!
I think a lot of it is not because of the fertility treatments, but due to the reasons the couple is having treatments to begin with. Of course, age is a big factor, but there are also other conditions that may lead to a higher incidence of birth defects.
My RE did say that she prefers not to use ICSI if it's not necessary because she thinks you are more likely to have a healthy baby without it (basically survival of the fittest). She said that letting the healthiest sperm fertilize the eggs on their own is better than just picking a sperm to fertilize an egg because you don't know the quality of the sperm selected.
Our second pregnancy was unassisted and ended in a loss due to Down Syndrome. We were unexplained, but I have wondered if there is a quality issue that kept us from getting pregnant for so long and that led to our daughter having Downs.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!
IVF #1 - BFP (6dt)
Unassisted Pregnancy #2 - lost at 15w6d due to T21, severe heart defects, and fetal hydrops
