Solutions for cleaning silver nitrate off skin?

My son had a stubborn granuloma that has taken several applications of silver nitrate to finally get rid of. This last time, it must have gotten a little wet when I was sponge bathing him and he has a big stain on his skin under his belly button. I tried using a little rubbing alcohol and it didn't even touch it. Is there some secret solution to get this stuff off of him or do I just have to wait it out until it goes away on its own?

  • our pedi had to use this too, DD had a granuloma. She said the staining from the silver nitrate will eventually go away but it could take months. that's not abnormal.

not much you can do about it according to her!

  • Nothing to do but wait.  I use it at work and have gotten it on my hands from time to time.  Other than a lot of exfoliating and frequent hand washing there isn't a good way to speed up the fading.  Depending on how much is on there and how frequently you wash the area it may take a few weeks to disappear completely.
