  • What exactly are you looking for in terms of target skills?  I have a million for speech and language.  I also have a couple that read interactive social stories.

  • I have no idea. I just got the ipad and I keep hearing about how great it is for kids with ASD. They both like the alphabet.

One of my sons has very littel interest in most things, but he seems to care a little about hte ipad, so anything that would grab his attention would be good!!

  • Starfall is a great app that features animals, colors and the alphabet. I pretty much stick to games that involve some kind of learning/interaction and not just watching the screen. I also downloaded the talktablet app for DS1 that we are using as a AAC device.

  • There are so many apps out there that are wonderful.  Make yourself a list of things you would like to encourage ds to do and we can help from there or do an app search.

Are you looking for fine motors kills, speech, words, social stories?

  • These are for Android, but I assume they have them for iPad, too.

Our SLP recommended a few, but the ones I can remember right now are Cookies and Cupcakes. They're on our fun list rather than our learning list.

DD1 LOVES cupcakes. It allows you a huge range of choices -- picking color of cupcake lines, what flavor frosting, what flavor batter, whether to use a recipe (and then you flip through a "recipe book") or a boxed mix, then you get to pick from dozens of toppings.  Then you can "eat" your cupcake by tapping on it.

It's good because it's open-ended, rather than repetitive. DD1 will make her own, or take requests of different kinds of cupcakes to make, and then "share" them with us when she's done. It's very cute.

I haven't downloaded Cookies yet, but I think it's the same idea.

  • My sons are 2 years old.

For AJ, I would like to encourage language. He can get stuck on games, so I'm not sure how to handle that. He's got abilties to manuver things on a computer by his finger, so I think he would enjoy many games.

For Garrett I would like to encourage any kind of participation. It needs to be very simple wit ha big reward, like music or something bright and fun. He is just starting to attempt to touch the screen. He has a very short attention span. He has very little speech and we aren't sure what his receptive language is like. My hope is that he will be motivated by the ipad and we can use it as a reinforcement.

  • My DS is 2.5 and we have stopped using the ipad (for now) because he just goes from app to app and hits the power button a zillion times. Then he has a tantrum when we try to end the activity OR he has a tantrum because he gets frustrated with it. I am thinking we may need to get him a leap-pad around age 3. He tried a friend's and was able to focus more and enjoy that. The ipad I think is too sensitive and large, so he ends up confusing it and then getting frustrated.

I will be waiting to hear what works for your boys-- maybe we just have the wrong apps!

Some he does enjoy before he confuses the ipad are Pocket Zoo and Baby Piano.

  • Chris has been doing starfall, alien buddies, legos, and a few others.  We got most of what we have for free.  The Alien Buddies was made by a friend of mine and Chris loves it.  That one was $1.99.  I can send you a list of what we put on that Chris uses if you want.
  • In no particular order:

Tozzle, Scout and Me (interactive leap frog app, says your child's name), monkey preschool lunchbox, wheels on the bus and fish school by duck duck moose, peakaboo barn, tap tap baby, vocal zoo, fisher price laugh and learn shapes and colors, baby first puzzle farm lite, shapes and PBS kids for watching shows.

Some of these apps are free in the lite version but they loved them so much we paid for the full versions.

  • DS who is also 2 likes a bunch: iPlay & Sing, Peekaboo barn and Peekaboo Wild, Scouts ABCs, Fish School, Montessori 123, 123 Numbers, Itsy Bitsy, Shapes.

Most of all, he likes to look at the videos we take (which are mostly of him!).
