So we now have a toddler. A tantrum-throwing toddler. And I know it's normal, but I do want to discourage that behavior, especially since she now has a bump on her head from banging it on the floor.
She is way too young for time-outs, and honestly I don't think I like the idea of those ever (no offense to those who use them). I grew up in a household where verbal and physical abuse were commonplace, so I have no reference point for what gentle discipline looks like.
So I'm looking for book recommendations on gentle discipline, so we can figure out what to do now and when DD gets older. TIA!
Re: Rec your gentle discipline books!
I love the Positive Discipline books. We have the ones for the first three years and the preschool years. You can find them used on Amazon for just a few dollars.
I use the ideas in those books every day with my almost 2 year old. They really help you see through the eyes of a child and how frustrating their world can be. I feel like I understand my child better and am less likely to get upset with her when she is upset about something. It is more about figuring out what the problem is and learning how to communicate best with a toddler. The ideas in those books make logical sense to me, so they are easy to implement.
I've also learned from those books to include my child more in whatever I'm doing. Most of the time, she just wants to help (we use a kids safe knife and let her help spread pb&j, let her help move laundry to the dryer, let her help set the table, let her "help" with a kids screwdriver when we're fixing things in the house, etc and she is much happier when she feels that she's helping). Highly recommend those books.
Agreed! I picked up a few at the library and found them very useful. I wish I would have bought them a long time ago!
