Would you find this strange/irritating?

I'm trying to figure out if this is me being overly sensitive or not.  Here is the deal: My FIL refers to my LO as "the fetus."  Not the baby. Not by his name--which he knows.  Not "your son" or "my grandson."  Just "the fetus."  It seems strange to me.  As background info, FIL has never liked me and it has been a serious problem in the past with him making this known and being rather cruel to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not loosing sleep over this and I know it is really a very small thing...but it just seems odd to me. What is your take?

Re: Would you find this strange/irritating?

  • Yes, this would bug me and I think you are justified in the way you feel.  I'd come up with a name for FIL and use it everytime you refer to him in his presence :)

  • Yeah it sounds like he's doing it to be mean, I'd be irritated too, hopefully he comes around when baby is no longer a fetus and isn't quite so mean! Sorry you have to deal with that!

  • Yes. It would bug me. I would ignore him.

I've referred to the baby as 'the fetus' or 'the parasite' often. But it would bug me if someone else did, if I wasn't.

It's probably not worth getting in a fight over, but I think you're justified if being annoyed.

haha, this is what we call my baby at work.

OP - I think it is strange for someone to use that term on their own accord

  • We do not call LO "the fetus."  FIL is completely doing this on his own.  I really don't know if he is trying to be funny or mean or what.  I think I will probably just ignore him. I'm not around him very much anyway.

  • That's kind of insensitive of him IMO.  I'd find a good name for him, like old man, or "the in-law".  See how he likes it then.  The best thing to do would be to pay him no mind or talk to him about the baby (or anything if you said it has never been a good relationship).

ITA that it's not cool for another person to call your baby something like "the fetus" if you aren't yourselves saying it. He sounds like an arse.

  • Meh.  Men are weird and, in my experience, tend to bond with the baby more after it's born.  I wouldn't let it bug me.

I think coming from someone that I know didn't like me, it would bother me too. If a friend said it, I would find it funny.

  • I wouldn't get upset unless you had talked to him and asked him not to refer to your LO that way.  He probably thinks he's being funny, but there's no use getting irritated if you haven't asked for the behavior to stop.  If you ask and he still calls baby "the fetus", then you have grounds to be upset.
  • I don't know if it's malicious on his part or not, but that really would bother me.  :/  Good luck!

It would bug me too.  My FIL is really weird and honestly, it's best just to ignore it.  If I respond to something weird he says, it just makes things worse.

This is my FIL, too.  If I let him know it bothers me (or even if DH says something to him) it will just make the behavior worse.  If he knows the term bothers me, he will just use it more.

  • Yah, it's annoying and creepy.

At least he's not calling the baby, "Little <insert his name>".  My FIL has been doing this and I thought it was hilarious until MIL made a suggestion to name the baby after FIL.  Then it was creepy.........
