I finally had to do it this week because Alana exceeded the weight limit. In fact, I should have turned it 5 months ago! I thought the weight limit was 40lbs, but, in fact, it was 35lbs, and she was that at her 2 year appointment in December. Oops!
Now, the forward facing weight limit is 65lbs, so, I assumed she'd be in this carseat until she moved to a booster, but, the techs who turned her seat for me (we have a weekly carseat installation/inspection station in town where they do it for you), who, by the way, were incredibly impressed that I kept her rear-facing this long, told me that they think she'll exceed the height on this seat inside of a year and I'll need to buy a whole new seat - a carseat that converts to a high back booster.
Of course, we'll do whatever we have to do for her safety, but, man, I didn't think I'd have to get another expensive seat! Did this happen to anyone else and, if so, what did you end up getting (I'm not buying yet, obviously, because they are always coming out with seats with higher height and weight limits)?
Re: Almost made it to 2.5 before turning carseat
Nice work!! My DS could still be RFing based on weight limits - he is only 28 lbs at over 3yrs, but we turned him after 2...my DH was getting annoyed with trying to fight him into his seat. DD is a little peanut, too, and I am going to keep her RFing longer - she is not only under 25lbs, but she is short, too. Hopefully she will cooperate!
As for the next step, my niece is 7years old and still in her 5 pt restraint - a Britax Frontier. It goes to 85lbs as a 5 pt restraint, and 120 lbs as a booster seat. It is HUGE, but she is happy with it! Good luck!
I once had a picture until the trolls showed up.

We turned Cora at 2.5. She is about 35 lbs now. I seriously doubt A would be over 65 pounds or over the height in the next year. Kids really start to level out weight wise around 2/3/4.
Justin just got out of a 5 point harness - he is 6. Very slender though. We ONLY moved him because Cora was going in his seat lol. Oh, and we have the Britax Frontier (Jusitn's old - Cora's New Seat)
Great Job!

I thought it would be hard for her to reach the height, too, and they didn't even see her. But, as I think about it, Alana has short legs and her height is in her torso. The height thing is all about where the straps hit at the shoulder, so, there is a possibility. I'm not running out to buy a seat (the Frontier is the one they actually mentioned), but, it will be interesting to watch and see what happens.

First I bought a Roundabout because it was a little cheaper than a Marathon. Then my DS outgrew it for height RFing before I was ready to turn him to FFing. Then I got a Marathon. Then he outgrew that for height FFing at about 3. Now we have a Radian, and he's still in it at 3.5. Oh, x 2 cars.
Went straight to the Radians for the twins. I'm well over $1000, probably $1500 on carseats, sadly.
My 5.5 year old is barely hitting 40 lbs now, but he's tall and keeps hitting the height limits.
