NTR Clicky

I just found some cans of tuna in my pantry that expired in 2010. Should I eat or toss it?

    Is this a real question?

  • Can I ask if you are from a different country?

Totally not snarky at all.... But I'm curious for 2 reasons. 1.) my dad who is not from this country pays ZERO attention to expiration dates. He'll eat ANYTHING no matter item or date. True story.

But also I love your daughters name. And I don't see it often... It's actually my grandmothers name & what we will be naming my DD as soon as she's born any day now :)

Oh, I voted to toss it. But honestly, I've probably eaten worse.

I was born here, but my parents were born in Puerto Rico. My dad also doesn't pay any mind to expiration dates. My instinct was to toss it, but DH (true story) doesn't think canned foods can really expire, he thinks the food might just taste a little "off" but that you can't get food poisoning or anything Confused not sure why I would want to eat "off" tasting tuna anyway. I posted this to see if other people share his sentiment.

Anyhoo, we just found the name to be beautiful. We could not agree on any girl names (we were team green, and had a boy name picked out 1 week after BFP), and then one day DH calls me and says "what about Nyla"? I loved it instantly. We looked it up and it meant "she who will succeed", so we liked it even more. We wanted something different, but not youneek, kwim? Can I ask where your family is from? Good luck with your Nyla!

  • Someone actually voted to feed some to the cat first! LOL! That's funny. If it was only a week or two, I'd consider using it. Tuna isn't that expensive though, so might as well just toss it.

Of course, we are Lebanese... Nayla/Nyla/Naila is Arabic meaning success/ to succeed like you said. I only know 2 others with that name & they are both in my family. Both are beyond gorgeous and very successful. My cousin is actually a heart surgeon and I will be asking her to be my DD Godmother :)

  • Also... I cleaned out my parents pantry last year and threw stuff out from the late 1990's and my dad went through the garbage to get it out!!!!

"things just don't go bad. If you don't like it, leave it and I'll eat it"

Ive never seen ketchup the color of this ketchup before!

  • Expiration dates are always very conservative. There are actually sites out there that will tell you exactly how conservative depending on what food, and how it is stored.

I did a bit of research on canned food a few years ago, and the date at which is expires is not when it goes bad, it is when the nutrients start to diminish/degrade. It doesn't turn to acid and start killing you.

You can even donate it to a food bank, and they are very familiar with how long food actually is good for.

Approx shelf life of canned tuna is 60 months, but that is conservative. If you *ever* see bulging, whether it is in date or not, do not use it.  Everything goes bad, but if you know the process of commercial canning, then you won't worry too much anymore.

  • The other thing that I was wondering is about BPA... isn't it used in canned foods as a sealant to keep the metals from leaching into the foods? I think I would be somewhat concerned about that as well.
