Flying Help

I know several of you have flown with your LO and I have some questions. My friend in NE is probably not going to make it for her yearly visit to OH so DW surprised me and booked a flight for Ky and I to go to NE over Memorial Day weekend! Ky will still be under 2 so she is riding on my lap. Here are some questions that have come up in between the tears from both me and my friend L.

The carrier will allow me to check my carseat free of charge. My friend in NE said she has an extra carseat too though. Would you check yours or use their extra?

Would it be easier for me to use the umbrella stroller and gate check it when we get on the plane or just have Ky walk? Neither the beginning nor the ending airport are large but we have a layover in Denver. But with a layover do we get the gate checked item back or not?

As far as the carryon goes would it be easier to carry a backpack so I have both hands free for Ky or a wheeled carryon which only leaves one free hand?

What did you find came in handy on the plane? The flight from here to Denver is about 2.5 hours and the on from Denver to NE is about 60 minutes. We have a 1.5 hour layover both ways.

If she has a car seat you can use, I would use that one. No need to schlep that with you if you have one available that you trust!

I would definately take the umbrella stroller and gate check it (yes, you will get it at your layover.) You will want her to walk some to burn off some energy, but there is a LOT of walking in airports and they are often super crowded.

I would take the backpack so you have it on your back and have 2 hands free (either to push the stroller or to  push the stroller and hold her hand.)

Bring lots of entertainment. Having a nearly 2y old lap child SUCKS. I understand from the cost perspective and we did it too - but it is a long time for a nearly 2 year old to sit in a REALLY confined space. I think the window seats are the easiest to contain the kid. Some airlines will let you have the extra seat if available (Southwest is great about this.)

If possible, pre-board and get everything out you think you will need and put it in the pocket in front of you (getting to your bag under the seat in front of you is difficult with a kid in your lap.) You might get lucky and she might nap for a portion of the flight. The white plane noise still puts Carter out.  New books, little play stuff from the dollar store, lots of snacks, a way to watch videos are all helpful.

You can bring snacks and drinks for her through security - they will just test it.

    Have a great time!!
