best way to scare a FTM...tell her DD has diabetes

At a family function tonight, my cousin who is a pharmacist started asking all these questions...

"How much did she weigh at birth"

"How much is she now"

"How often and how much does she eat"

"She has 12 diaper changes a day"

I can tell she is trying to say something without saying it so I just asked her what she thought.  She said that DD has the syptoms of diabetes.  She thinks that she eats too much and pees too much.  Even though my rational side knows that neither of those are the case, I felt like I was going to throw up. DD eats about 25-30 oz a day which is almost exactly her weight X 2.5, which i've read is good guide.  She does have a lot of diaper changes but her diapers aren't always soggy.  She hates having a wet diaper.  So instead of sitting in a wet diaper for 2-3 hrs until it fills up, she  tinkles and wants to change.  Most of the time her diaper doesn't even feel like its wet, the only way I know it is, is beacuse that yellow line will be turning blue in a couple of spots.

I guess I'm writing this as a vent, to get some encouragement, and maybe have some moms tell me that their LO is healty and is just like DD....:(   I'm going to be paranoid until her 2 month appt wednesday.

  • I'm surprised you didn't slap her! You have more self-control than I do. Seriously, though: a *baby* has diabetes because they have too many diapers and eats "too much"? If that's the case, then all of our babies have diabetes because most babies eat 25-30oz and most babies go through a ton of diapers. She has no idea what she's talking about if she's diagnosing based on those things.

  • Meh, don't let it get to you at all. People are all going to have their own opinions, you just need to remind yourself that you are her mother & you know her better than anyone else. If that means that she has 12 dirty diaps a day & eats often, so be it.

And let me guess - she isn't a mother. Before I became one I had no idea how often these babies eat and pee. It is their only job so that's all they do. Your cousin, on the other hand, is an ignoramous who would be fired if she pulled that BS at work. And you are free to tell her I said so. But I am sorry that she startled you. Not cool at all.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • That's crazy. Why I'd she even tell you that? Can a baby eve have diabetes??

  • I looked up the common symptoms and according to babycenter increased appetite, increased thirst, and frequent urination are symptoms. The other two are sweet or winelike smelling breath and sudden weight loss. Even with the first 3 she's off base because they are increases from what is normal for your baby, not a pre quantified amount. If you baby goes from 12 diapers a day to 20 that could be a symptom but 12 diapers is not.

Again, she's a pharmacist.  A pharmacist.  One who apparently thinks it's entertaining to use her very specialized and limited medical knowledge to informally diagnose your child.  I think it's misinformed at best, negligent and obnoxious at worst.

I couldn't have said it better!

  • Um.  Not cool at all, and so totally off base!  I read just the other day that EBF babies take an average of 24 oz per day (range was 22-30oz) until they are about 6 mo old.  Not sure what the average is for FF babies, but, if its not the exact same, it shouldn't be far off.  Our LO probably has 10 diaper changes a day... and it was more before we started CDing and I could see the indicator (b/c she doesn't fret unless the diaper is poopy or really full of pee).  Your LO is 100% fine... If your pedi isn't worried, you shouldn't be either!  Tell your cousin to eff off :)

  • Totally with you! I stayed with my parents for a few weeks and was told the entire time I was there that something was very wrong with DS and he probably had autism, muscular distrophy, or some mental issue. I was broken for about the first two weeks, and then realized that it was just crazy talk.
