  • Awww, thank you all!!  We got the best news that I could have expected.  They believe that it is a coledocal cyst.  It looks like it is attached to the liver and the gall bladder.  This type of cyst is not fatal.  It will still have to be removed, most likely in the baby's first 6 months of life.  The doctor said it is actually good to diagnose this in utero because usually people who have these are fine for a while and then they get really sick (like throwing up and lots of pain).  He said it usually takes doctors a long time to figure out what the problem is so the poor child is in pain for a long time until they can find the problem.  Since we already know about it, we can get it removed before it starts causing problems.  Apparently it is pretty rare to find these during pregnancy so the doctor seemed really excited to get all kinds of pictures of it and check it out.  He was a really nice doctor and explained things really well, but I just found it kind of funny that he was so excited and facinated by my baby's abnormality since I obviously cannot share in his excitment or facination.  However, I have to say I was walking on air for a while after finding out that it was not fatal and was not related to any other problems.  Some of the other options they were talking about before could be associated with downs, trisomy 18, and cystic fibrosis.  It looks like that is not the case with this so thank God!!

  • So, I was just researching this online and it looks like it is very rare in the western world.  The cases of live births per year with this abnormality ranges from 1 in 100,000 births all the way up to 1 in 2 million births.  It is much more common in Asian countries with the numbers in Japan being 1 in 1000.  Maybe we should go play the lottery.
