Natural Birth

Prodromal Labor-someone help me before I jump off a cliff...

I am on day 11 of prodromal and I really am reaching a breaking point.

I have not slept in days, I can barely function during the day, and am so tired of the mind games of this stupid never ending labor!

Has anyone had this? What did you do to finally "break into" natural labor?

I have tried every possible natural thing to get labor started (as suggested by my midwife) but I don't know how much longer I can take this.

  • Don't lose faith, this can't last forever! Sorry you are having such a hard time. I might not be much help as I have neve labored or even felt a contraction. Maybe focus on all the things you can't do once baby is here and keep busy with that? Congrats on sticking with Team Green - it will be worth the wait! Sending labor dust your way!

  • For sleep my MW suggested a glass of wine and a Tylenol PM. It helped a little bit.

I started prodromal labor on my due date and made a bunch of cookies thinking I'd be in labor soon. I was going to take them to the birth center. I ate them all over the next ten days. DH may have had a few...but mostly me. It is really frustrating and there isn't much you can really do other than to try hard to focus on something else.

  • I am a lurker.. but I can imagine being in your boat! STICK WITH IT MAMA! Like pp said, labor wont last forever, and soon you will have a beautiful baby that you will spend many more precious hours with than your memories of this shitty pre-labor!

  • Prodromal labor began for me the day after my due date.  I began to leak amniotic fluid on Day #5 and headed to the birth center to get started on antibiotics because I was GBS+, about 12 hours after I was admitted, the midwife decide to give me a little piotcin since things weren't progressing very quickly at all.  I finally delivered my son about 24 hours after being admitted (and after having a few more doses of pitocin administered) without feeling the need to request pain meds, which I attribute to the support of my doula and being able to labor in the birthing pool for 3 hours prior to and during transition.  Your baby will be here eventually but I really do remember how frustrating the 5 days of prodromal labor was.  Hang in there!!

  • I had it for a long time with my son. It seemed to go on for weeks. By the time I finally had my son (24 hours after a membrane sweep haha) I hadn't slept in days. Try to relax and just rest your body as much as you can!

Acupuncture usually works pretty well, also good hydration, and all the stuff on spinningbabies.com

If there's anxiety or fear involved, doing a fear release is helpful. Some people go prodromal because they aren't mentally ready.

  • I thought I had it bad because mine went to a day and a half! I wish I had some ideas for you, but I have no idea why mine suddenly decided to progress instead of stalling out yet again. I had been eating tons of eggplant and pineapple and would bounce on my ball or walk when I felt the most crampy, and that seemed to encourage the dilation and get me more bloody show. If you can find anything that seems to get you more dilated, I'd say to try that.

Good luck! I hope you get some rest and/or active labor soon!

  • I hope you've made some progress now!  I don't have anything to offer, except that I'm thinking about you and also I found this really funny:

This sounds like something I would do.

  • That sounds dreadful.  I remember having it on and off for a week or so with #2.  I kept calling the midwife to give a heads up thinking it was really going each time, and then after 4 or 5 hours it would stall out.  I tried to convince myself I had just peed my pants when my water finally broke because I didn't want to call my MW again if this wasn't really it.

I second what PP said about a small glass of wine to relax.  Try to get some good rest and then perhaps try nipple stimulation or castor oil if your MW is okay with it.

  • I am on day 9, although it seems mine is a little bit less intense than yours. My techniques have been napping when I can, drinking LOTS of fluids, walking, warm showers and Tylenol (particularly the PM kind which gets me about 4 hours of sleep each night.) For me, just telling myself that they COULD give me pain relievers at L&D but I don't really want to take morphine has helped with rallying my determination to cope. Good luck and I hope it decides to become real labor for you soon!
