I'm finally getting around to typing all this up!
My induction was scheduled for 40w6d, going in for Cervadil on Thursday afternoon, 4/19/12. I was admitted to the hospital around 4pm. They got me all hooked up and checked me, I was 1cm, 70% effaced. This was an improvement from the 1cm and thick that I was at my 40w appt. The resident who placed my Cervadil was confident that, already being 70% thinned, I would probably go into labor on my own through the night. So, we waited. Tried to sleep a little. 6am came around and they removed the Cervadil. I was still 1cm and 70%. But, I was contracting some. The resident came in and broke my water, which hurt TERRIBLY! Oh my goodness, I cried!! She said contractions would most likely pick up from that point. Wrong.
Having my bag of waters broken was probably one of the most disgusting experiences of my life. It was just gushing out of me all.day.long. I hated it and it totally prohibited me from getting up and moving through my contractions like I wanted. It was so gross. My contractions started to pick up and were getting more noticeable, but I wasn't dilating. I finally got up to pee and emptying my bladder totally caused the contractions to stop. Boo. Pitocin was started at 1pm. It was slow going. Still no further dilation. My wonderful OB came in and said she would do everything in her power to get me the vaginal delivery that I was wanting. As long as baby and myself were tolerating things, she had no timeline.
About 4pm things changed quickly, I was in major pain from the contractions. I could not believe how bad they were. I was crying through them. My OB came in and we discussed an epi, but only being 3cm, I was scared it would cause things to slow down even more. I ended up getting it. DH and my mom said that if I would have refused the epi they would have chased the doctor out into the hall and told her I really did need it! I was not handling things well ![]()
After the epi, my body relaxed and finally started dilating at about 1cm/hour. It was so nice to be comfortable. Time passed. It took me awhile, but I was progressing. Finally finally, I was 10cm and 100% at about 1:30am (33 hours after arriving at the hospital). I labored down for an hour and at about 2:45, it was time to push! I could feel the contractions and pushing came really naturally for me. I pushed for only 18 minutes and was instructed to stop to wait for my OB to arrive. Finally, at 3:38am, our Team Green surprise was born... a precious baby girl!!! DH and I were shocked, we were both kind of expecting a boy! Having her placed on my chest was such a surreal moment! I couldn't believe she was here and she was ours!!!! She weighed 7lbs 5.6oz and was 20 1/2" long. She has a full head of long, dark hair! We named her Edith Quinn. We have been calling her Edie for short.
My placenta was delivered in one last contraction, and my OB stitched me up. During pushing, she said she wanted to do an episiotomy and I asked if it was completely necessary, she ended up not cutting me, and I ended up with a 2nd degree labial tear on one side. Oh, and hemmerhoids from HELL. But, no poop on the table for this mama! Haha.
I can't believe tomorrow is Edie's 2 week birthday. My recovery has been really easy. The labial tear has caused me no pain at all. From what I can tell, my lady bits look normal. The hemmerhoids were very painful for the first week, but they are down to a very manageable size now, haha. BFing is going just so-so. I'm using a shield on both sides (lefty is inverted) and Edie's being treated for thrush and me for yeast on my nips. Hopefully that will help my pain!
