Attention-seeking accidents?

My 3 year old DD has been in underwear for about 2 months now and doing well.  Shes now having accidents again 1-2x/week.  The thing is, they always follow the same pattern...always at home, when I'm holding the 5 month old.  She says she has to go and needs my help (had been going completely independently previously), starts stalling by playing with one more thing and doing just one more thing, then pees in her pants standing right in front of the toilet.  I feel like there is an attention-seeking componenet to it because of the pattern and am not sure of how to try to resolve it.  I don't want to punish her by any means, but I do want to send the message that we need to work on stopping this because I truly do think she's able.  Any suggestions?

My 2.5 yr old went through this stage, we are relocating and my husband is out of state during the week so the 2nd weekend he was home if I was having a discussion with my husband he would pee on the floor (not an accident, since he knows wetness)... he was definitely seeking attention from me and jealous of not having me all to himself. While I think it is important that I do not stop what I am doing, he is still young and needs the attention. So knowing that, I am able to help support him more. It fortunately only happened for that weekend.

  • I would probably firmly but kindly insist she go as soon as she expressed the need for help. Tell her if she wants your help she needs to go now, and not once she's done playing with this or that. DS went thru a very short period of what seemed to be attention seeking accidents, and while he wasn't punished for it, we did express our displeasure, without making it a big deal, and make him clean it up himself. It wasn't punishment, but a lesson in learning to clean up after you make a mess. Thankfully the phase didnt last long.
