Natural Birth

Just worried is all....

I know I'm several weeks away from being able to have sex again but I'm already thinking about it. I'm not worried about it being painful because I know the first couple of times post baby will be (I only had 3 stitches). I'm very concerned about getting pregnant again. The current plan is to have an IUD in at 7 weeks post partum but I'm still worried.

My sis has had 3 pregnancies with an IUD.......2 miscarries and one full term. But she had issues with birth control and I didn't. I just don't want to have a second baby any time soon....maybe when LO is 2 or 3. Anyone have any advise or personal story that may help?

  • FWIW, sex for me wasn't painful at all when I finally gave in. I had a 3rd degree episiotomy. Kind of squished my full boobs a little, lol.

Have you looked at Mirena? It's an IUD with low amounts of hormone. I have a couple of friends who swear by it. My OB is recommending it for me because I have horrible period pain. On par with labor. I wanted to tie my tubes, but she said that will make the pain worse.

  • Mirena is the one I'm leaning towards....big time. But how long til it's effective? Should I use back up the first 2 months. I know of several moms who have babies less than 18 months apart.

  • I had Mirena in before I got pregnant and I loved it! No need to remember anything, good for 5 years, I didn't have a period after about 6 months, and your fertility goes right back immediately after you get it removed (I was pregnant 4 weeks after my removal). Highly recommend it. It hurts like a B going in, but well worth it - I'll definitely get another one.

I don't remember how long after it was put in before it was effective - I want to say it was six weeks? We just used a condom during that time, no biggie. Your doctor should be able to tell you that part when you get it inserted.

  • I believe mirena is effective immediately but I may be making that up, I had mine placed in 2008 and we didn't have to use backup BC so I'm pretty sure it works from day 1.  Same for when it comes out, you can be fertile immediately (I wasn't, but there were other issues there!)

I loved my mirena and had it for 3 years until we decided to TTC.  I had no periods after the first month, which was a fabulous side effect IMO!  That doesn't happen for all women but it does for many, or your periods get lighter.  I plan to get another after we have this baby

  • Did you and/or spouse feel the threads during sex? and is it annoying to check every month or very easy?

  • My DH never felt the thread during sex, but if he did it would have just been a really quick trip to the doc to get them trimmed.

I didn't have to check for mine every month - the way my doctor put it is that if it came out, you would know. I went back to the doc a few weeks after it was inserted and she checked the placement and for the threads, that was it.

A word of advice - if you do get one put it, take motrin beforehand. I got extremely crampy after it was inserted and it seemed like forever before my pain meds kicked in.

  • I had a Mirena for 3 years before having it removed to get pregnant and I loved it.  I think we were told to use back up protection for the rest of that first month but that was it, and I could be wrong about that.  I didn't check it every month.  My H felt the strings in the very beginning but I think maybe my doctor trimmed them and it was no issue anymore.  Talk to your doctor about your worries.  If you get the IUD and you're still worried about that first month or two, just use condoms.

  • We all know that any method has small % of not working. The only method with 100% garantee is no sex. LOL

I am considering an IUD as well, but DH said no hooks near his equipment.

    Thanks for the info ladies

there's always condoms.  I know too many BC babies.
  • Condoms aren't 100% either and I don't like the feel. Neither does DH. The pill I was on before pregnancy worked for me but I figured the IUD would be easier (not having to remember to take a pill each day). Also have heard that the Mirena shortens your periods.
