My DD just turned a year old on April 24th! (WHERE DID THE TIME GO?!) She's done really well with her developmental milestones despite being so small. She weighed in at 15.5 lbs and 27 inches. She's never been a big eater and has had issues with reflux, which has seemed to resolve over time but she's still not a very big eater. She's pulling up on everything and crawling every where and babbles all the time.
The problem is... she won't drink from a sippy cup! She CAN, she just won't. I've tried probably half a dozen different cups- straw ones, hard spout, soft spout, even the avent one that is the most similar to a regular cup, I've tried taking out the valve...tried water, a little juice and water, formula. She loves water the best. She will drink the best if I put water in a straw and hold one end and let the water go slowly into her mouth. (lazy child!) She had the most success with the straw sippy but quickly lost interest in it. I'm worried that it's going to be impossible to transition her from bottles. She will be on formula for another couple months (closer to her adjusted 1 year) but I'm trying to get her to slowly start taking more liquids in a sippy but she won't have it!
Have any of you experienced this with your LO? Should I be concerned? She has an appt at the end of this month with her pedi for a 6 week weight check, so I will bring it up then. I was just curious if any of you had any advice or encouragement that it will get better!
Thanks guys!
Re: Question for moms of older preemies...
I know a couple of people have had success with this straw cup:

They don't have to suck too hard and the liquid flows quickly.
I've also been looking at this cup for H. He's not a fan of anything in his mouth, so I'm hoping this will help us ease into drinking again.

Thanks, B. I tried the second one you posted and it was okay I guess but it is kinda tricky because she has to push her top lip against the top of the cup to release the valve for water to come through. it kind of makes a mess. I hope H has more luck with it.
That's the problem with us too...she doesn't want anything in her mouth. I think that's why she likes the whole idea with me holding the straw and putting the water in her mouth. It's so frustrating! I know she can do it... she just won't!
DD1 has always been goofy when it comes to eating. At 12 months, she didn't asee close to ditching the bottle and her pediatrician wasn't too concerned. She just said being done by 15 months is a good goal. We just kept trying with the sippy cup and she got it.
Hi,
I experienced the same issue with my twin girls. I was concerned too at first, but then just decided to go at their pace. We tried everything but what worked for us is to continue with a bottle in the morning and before bed but during the day use a ( spout) sippy cup with mostly water, sometimes a little juice with their feedings/snacks. It took some time for them to adjust but little by little they started to accept the cup, it took many tries before getting there. My girls are 18 months and still doing it this way. I am slowly going to take out the morning bottle and then eventually the pm bottle. This learning process has taught me that what works for one may not work for another. Don't worry too much about it, she will accept it when she is ready.
Thanks guys! Currently, we are still doing 4 bottles a day. Right now, she's teething and drinking only about 4oz at a time, so I've been doing 5 bottles. She only equals up to about 20-22oz a day total.
Maybe that's too much? This is all so confusing! I want to make sure she gets all the calories she needs and doesn't lose weight. I may try offering a sippy with formula in place of one of the bottles and see how she does. I guess I will just have to keep offering it to her and hope she gets to liking it.
We went cold turkey right before 15 months. 2 weeks were rough, but he eventually gave in. It was pure stubbornness.
He only drinks from a straw cup.
once he learned the straw we moved to this cup. I love it because it's stainless steel.
