if you've never had chicken pox, but got vaccinated

has anyone talked to their doctor and asked what we should do if/when our kids get chicken pox? I think once we see the reb marks we've already been exposed anyway, but I'm wondering if it's ok to stay in the house with a sick child or would less exposure be better?

Thanks

Are you talking about if you, the parent, hasn't had chicken pox but you have been vaccinated later in life?  I have never had them but I had the vaccination a few years ago. I wouldn't worry about getting them from my sick child.

  • I had an extremely mild case when I was 2 (only a few spots), so I've been told that I can get them again. I have not gotten vaccinated. While I've heard that cases can be worse when you're older, I'm sure it's no worse than, say, recovery from a C-section while caring for a newborn and a preschooler. I've also had shingles and while they were painful, I could still function.

  • I have never had the chicken pox, but I have had the vaccine and a booster. DD2 got a full blown case of classic chicken pox at 9 months old (DH had shingles.) I was with her around the clock and never got them.

Oh, and the incubation period is 10 days, so by the time you see the red marks, you have already been exposed.

Would the child get the vaccine, too  - so, they never come down with the chicken pox??

And if you're vaccinated, why would you be conserned about exposure to an active case? Isn't that the point of the vaccine?

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.

A vaccine doesn't protect you 100% and I've heard that the chicken pox are more dangerous when you're older

  • A child doesn't get the vaccine until 12 months, which is why my DD1 got them at 9 months.

My pedi told me that one vaccine is 85% effective and 2 (after the booster...which kids get at age 5) it is 99% effective.

My sister never had chicken pox and was told that when he oldest got the vax that she had to get it as well at the same time which is what she did (that was already 10-11 years ago so that may have changed).

  • If you or your child has had the vaccine the odds of getting them are a lot slimmer, and if you do get them it will be a very mild case - not the awesome head to toe every orface kind of the 1980's.
