I officially hate cervical checks

Had my first one today and OUCH!!!!! Crying That doc had to really get up in there because my cervix was so high and it was NOT pleasant at all.  She said I'm 1cm dilated and 50% thinned out....whatever that means.

I'm now on weekly visits and will have my cervix checked every time....so not looking forward to my appt's anymore.

Re: I officially hate cervical checks

  • You can actually decline cervical checks.  Maybe have them every other week?  I'm sorry they hurt you and I now I am nervous about mine!

  • You will be 10 cm dilated and 100% effaced (thinned out) when the baby is ready to be born.  So you're 10% of the way there in one respect, and half way there in the other.

  • aww I am sorry it was so uncomfortable. I would ask your doctor how she feels about skipping them. I asked my doc at my appointment yesterday how she feels about them and she doesn't do them unless her patients really want to know and even still won't do it until 38 weeks. Maybe you can just forego this going forwars

  • If you hate them, then decline them. It's that simple. There's actually no need to get them, as your dilation bears NO indication on when you'll go into labor. And they present more opportunities for infection. Seriously, it's not a big deal to decline them (lots of women do), and your OB probably wont even care.

  • I'm probably the only one that it doesn't really bother. It doesn't hurt me at all.

Wish I was part of the loosey goosey club lol I think I will decline them until I am actually due. The info wasn't worth the pain. I actually had a few contractions because of it.

  • I'm sorry. They suck! I HATED them when I was pregnant with DS. They hurt so bad.

I have declined any of them for this pregnancy until I go into labor.....

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that found this to be awful.  My doc didn't even get to check my cervix, b/c she stopped b/c I was finding it to be so painful.  She said it wasn't worth it if it was hurting me so bad.

I was really freaked out by how very much it hurt:  I need to get more through there than just a couple skinny fingers!  I plan to say no next time and not try again until at least 37 maybe 38 weeks  . . . (unless she tells me she needs to for some reason.)

  • It didn't hurt me...it actually hurt more when she was externally pressing around my abdomen for baby's position.

    All of this.

I talked to my OB about this at my appointment yesterday and she said it was completely fine to not have them done. She said there's no risks involved in not getting them and the only reason they do them regularly is that most women want to know.

  • Oh gosh, I know. I remember how painful they were back in '06 with my DS. I get my first one next thursday. I'm not looking forward to it, especially cause my cervix is extra high, just like yours. :/

  • The only time I will allow an internal will be when she does the GBS test at my next appt and when I'm being checked into the hospital during labor.  Other than that, no one needs to be going there, since it won't give me any info on when I'll be going into labor.

  • I have heard you can decline them as well.  My doctor has not mentioned them but I am only 34 weeks. Thanks for the info that they are painful!.... I think I will opt out if given the choice!
