TTC after 35

Diagnosed with LPD - Starting Progesterone this cycle

Hi! I'm new to this board although I have lurked... Just turned 39 and just started TTC #1. After doing some googling on spotting before your period, I asked my doctor to test my progesterone since I start spotting at 8 DPO. My 6 DPO level was 5.5 so I am starting progesterone four days after I ovulate this cycle.

I was wondering if anyone has taken progesterone and if they have had side effects, and what in general I should expect? I have never taken hormones before. I also heard the suppositories work better than pills. Is that true?

My doctor said to try this for 2-3 months and then perhaps he will refer me to an RE. I can't remember my 3DPO FSH test level but he said it was "within the acceptable range but a little higher than he would like to see."

Thanks for any advice!

  • Welcome to the board.  I am taking progesterone post IVFand took it after both IUIs.  They make me a emotional and my breasts are very sore.  They are messy so you will need a liner.  Good luck to you.

  • Thank you for your information regarding the side effects you have experienced - not looking forward to being more emotional than I already am :-(. I should have mentioned I was prescribed the pills - he did not offer the suppositories but have since heard they work better - however I'm not sure of that.

  • I just started progesterone (Crinone) for the same reason last cycle. I went from a 5 day LP to 11 day and actually had my period arrive while I was on it. (Boo!)

I had no noticeable side-effects except that it made my post-O temperature very high. I also had a few days of crazy rage but that may have been PMS. :)

    Good luck!

    Oh no! That's not fair.

The one he prescribed me is Prometrium.

  • Welcome to the board!  The ladies here are very supportive & are a wealth of knowledge!  I am on Crinone suppositories right now following my first IUI.  I don't have any experience with the pills though, so I don't know if there's a big difference.  I've been cramping & severely bloated since I started them.

  • I've used the Crinone suppositories for 3 cycles now.  Towards the end of the cycle, I start getting really moody.  Also, I have a bit of nausea- not too bad.  It is doable, but not pleasant.

After IUI #2, my RE put me on Endometrin.  I was only on it for two days and asked the RE to switch me back to Crinone.  For some reason, my side effects were worse on the Endometrin (which is weird because they are the same thing, essentially).
