Bathing a 6 YO?

Is it me or is it weird to still be bathing a 6 1/2 YO?  I would think by that point the child would be bathing themselves, no?

Re: Bathing a 6 YO?

  • At 6.5 my nephew was washing himself, and she would go in wash his back and hair and that was all she did.

  • My older kids were washing by themselves at 6.5 yo. But honestly they could still use supervision. Hair doesn't get thoroughly washed unless I am helping. And I suspect that they mostly just rinse their bodies when I am not there.

In conclusion, yes its unusual to actually wash a 6.5 yo for them, but its not that odd to still help.

  • I hope I'm done by then! LOL At 4, I wash DD's hair but she does the rest. She's actually quite thorough, I just do her hair because she can't see it obviously and has missed spots. I would imagine though that she'll be good to go soon.

  • DD is 7 and has been showering by herself for at least 2 years. She used to not do a good job on her hair and wouldn't get all of the shampoo out but she's fine now :p

You also never know if there's a reason they insist on their parents being in there.  I know when I was 7 I went to a bday party and the stupid mom let us watch Nightmare on Elm Street.  There's the part with the hand coming through the tub which seriously made me afraid to take a bath alone for a year.  I made my mom sit in there with me.  I think she figured if she had to stay in there anyway she might as well help with things like rinsing my hair and such.

I've heard of kids who are just afraid of the drain randomly too though.

My nephew is 6. My sister allows him to bathe himself and then she washes/rinses his hair.

this. At that age my niece would come out with half washed hair with shampoo/conditioner clumps still in it if we didn't do it..

  • I think it is odd.  I was watching DH's cousin who is 10 for a week or so in February.  She still expected me to come in and sit with her and help wash her hair while she took a bath.  I thought this was very odd.  So, at 6, I think just helping with hair washing is okay, but at 10, it is totally unnacceptable.

On a side note, this child does not have a normal life and is very babied.  She still needs help picking out clothes and dressing.

  • Yes!!! I think it's strange. What I think is even more strange/creepy....my childhood friend visiting us from out of state with her 9 year old, who she proceeded to bathe and LOTION!! Not cool. She's a single mom (which for me, gives her a little room because he's really all she has) but come on, he's NINE!

Side note: I have a friend whose mom ran her own little hair salon in their house, She and her mom used to wash each others in the mornings. At first I thought it was weird, but then I realized it's AMAZING.

OP: I couldn't be trusted to wash myself at that age. I HATED bath time until I was probably 8.

  • DD1 is 6.5 and when she takes a bath with my 3 y/o, I sit on the floor and watch them play and make sure she cleans herself while I'm washing my 3 y/o, and I always check her hair before she gets out.

I don't have much time with them after work, dinner, and homework, so it's a good time to catch up -- and I like watching the girls play. They say some pretty funny things!

She does shower alone occasionally, and then I don't let her out until her hair is checked. It's thick and long and hard to get all of the shampoo out.

  • I run the bath, they get undressed, put clothes in the hamper, and get in the tub.  I still wash their hair, they wash their body.
