TTC after 35

I just took a big step (at least a big step in my mind)

I reached out to my PCP doc today (internal medicine - I don't have an OBGYN) and asked for a referral to a specialist.  Just finished the 8th cycle of trying and my 39th b-day is weeks away.

I looked at the profile of the doc she is recommending - she seems to be what I need - an OBGYN specializing in infertility.  I haven't made the call yet.  Just coming to grips with the fact that I need to see a doc for help and it is hitting a little harder than I expected.  I know many of you have already made that first call and have done SO much more, too.

Any words of advice on what to ask (if anything) when I call to set up an appointment?

  • It is a big step. I barely held myself together when I went to my OBGYN after 6 months of trying, and she commented on how visibly upset I was.

I would just ask for an appointment for basic infertility screening - if she specializes in IF, then her office staff should be used to those kinds of calls.

    Good luck.

  • GL, don't be scared, I know it can seem like your admitting defeat but it's more important to be proactive. At the end of the day the specialist will make recommendations, just remember when it comes down to making decisions that's 100% in your hands.

  • Good luck!  It was hard for me to take that first step but it was worth it.  No advice on setting up the appointment.  However, I took my carts to my appointments with both my OB and my RE.  It helped to get treatment faster because they could see that I really did have a problem.

Good luck and just think you are being proactive and doing something to help yourself. If I waited any longer I may have missed my window. Who knows I may have already missed my window. Everyone is different, at 37 I never thought I would be this old on the inside.

  • I agree with pps-- it's hard to acknowledge that your body is letting you down, but this is the most control you can wield in this situation and it IS empowering and therapeutic to be proactive.

If you have charts, bring 'em. And don't be afraid to let out some of your anxieties, anger, etc. while you're there-- this doc should be used to it and I know I felt much better (and like I was being taken seriously) when my doc acknowledged and validated my feelings (which took me by surprise, because I hadn't realized I felt this strongly about the issue until the tears erupted).

    Good luck!

  • I'm trying to get my sister to take that step.  She is very reluctant after trying for a few years now.  I think you will feel relief once you have someone working with you to really help you realize your dream and become pregnant.

My only recommendation is to make sure you like your doctor.  We really connected with ours and I've since run into her twice outside of the office - at a charity gala and doing the Resolve walk for infertility early on a Saturday morning.  Things like that make me feel better about choosing her - knowing she is a giving person.  I hope you find a doc you like and good luck!

I love my PCP - we run into each other shoe shopping all the time.  :)  I know she has my best interests at heart and she was so happy to hear that I finally got married and we are TTC.  I so wish she was an OBGYN.  I stay with her since both sides of my family have diabetes issues and that is one of her major interests.  No issues for me on that front so far, but it nice to know she keeps an eye out for early warning signs.

I hope I have half the relationship with the new doc that I have with her - I will be lucky.

  • Good luck -- I think the sooner, the better.  As mentioned above, you need to have trust in your doctor and the sooner you get the process started you won't feel pressure to stick with that one doctor if it doesn't really work out.  Also, the sooner you start investigating (and treating) what is keeping you from seeing a BFP the sooner you'll probably get one! :)

  • I don't have anything to add, but I wanted to say good luck. Just doing something will feel good.

Appointment set for 5/24 over lunch.  Surprised I was able to get in pretty quick (just under 3 weeks out).

Told them I have been charting - they sounded happy to hear that and told me to bring copies with me.
