Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone start in a daycare at 2 years old?

Hey ladies. Since 7 weeks old, DS has been at in in-home care provider. We have loved just about every thing about his caregiver, but due to our change in needs (I wont get into the details) we are switching DS to a daycare center. After alot of touring and interviewing, we found one we really like. DS spent the morning there today and did great! Shy and clingy at first but when I went to pick him up he had no idea I was there! He had so much fun and was so happy and talked about it the whole way home. That made me feel ALOT better. The biggest change, and what I hope you all have some insight on, is that DS will sleep on a mat there. He still sleeps in a crib at home. While interviewing centers, I brought up this concern and they all said the kids seem to transition well, especially once they see the other kids sleeping on mats. Also, they go down for a nap about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs earlier than he is used to.

If you started DC in a daycare around age 2, how did the mat/cot nap transition go? Any suggestions to help him deal with an earlier nap time?

luckily i don't think these things are anything another child wouldn't face when transitioning in from a younger room. My LO came into the toddler room at 12 months from the infant room and went from crib to mat and went from his at home schedule to the daycare schedule. the mat was a non-issue and the schedule just took some adjusting. I wouldnt' worry . . . .

  • My DS was at an in-home place until 18 months when we moved him to a traditional daycare center. I didn't think the napping on mats would work at all since he was always in a crib or PnP at that point. However, it was never an issue and he seemed to adjust to the schedule right away. I'm still amazed how the teachers are able to keep the kids on their mats.

We also bought a little pillow and blanket before he started going to the DC, and I think letting him pick it out and laying on it at home before might have helped a little. We bought our pillow and blanket from Bed Bath & Beyond, and it's an all-in-one machine washable thing. He loves it!

  • He will be fine.. it will take a few times to adjust to it.. but by day 2 for DS, he was sleeping on the matt no problem!  DS went into daycare at 15 months.  I always worried about the nap time also, but he does fine, they adjust to the schedule.  I try to keep on the same schedule when he is home.. giver or take an hour for afternoon nap.

  • Ds went at about two and a half, before that he was one on one with my aunt. He slept in a toddler bed here at home, but he had no issues switching to a mat at school. They also napped like at least two hours earlier than ds did at home, and he did fine with that.  Our big transition was the sadness about being left there, but he got over it.  Good luck!

DS turned 2 today. He started daycare for the first time last Monday. He has been crying at drop off every day (it's starting to get better though) but super happy in the afternoons when we pick up. He hasn't gotten nap time down yet. He's been napping for about 45 mins tops. He was in home at my SIL's house before.
