Toddlers: 24 Months+

Anyone start at a daycare at age 2? slightly different than post below :)

Hey ladies.I posted this on 12-24 but thought I would also try here.

Since 7 weeks old, DS has been at in in-home care provider. We have loved just about every thing about his caregiver, but due to our change in needs (I wont get into the details) we are switching DS to a daycare center. After alot of touring and interviewing, we found one we really like. DS spent the morning there today and did great! Shy and clingy at first but when I went to pick him up he had no idea I was there! He had so much fun and was so happy and talked about it the whole way home. That made me feel ALOT better. The biggest change, and what I hope you all have some insight on, is that DS will sleep on a mat there. He still sleeps in a crib at home. While interviewing centers, I brought up this concern and they all said the kids seem to transition well, especially once they see the other kids sleeping on mats. Also, they go down for a nap about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs earlier than he is used to.

If you started DC in a daycare around age 2, how did the mat/cot nap transition go? Any suggestions to help him deal with an earlier nap time?

  • We started DS in daycare at 18 months. The transition went great. He loved it there and he adjusted to their schedule. He actually loved the cot so much that we transitioned him at home to a toddler bed a few months later. He will adjust to them and, when he sees other kids doing the same thing, it won't take him long to figure it out too.

I'm lucky b/c both of my kids did very well w/ the mat transition. It was the move at home from crib to bed that was tough. Earlier nap time, your DS will eventually join the same schedule. You can try to wake him up slightly earlier in the mornings so he will become exhausted earlier. This may also cause a change in normal bed time as well. For me, the hardest adjustment w/ new DC is at drop-off. Hopefully, you will only have a brief adjustment period as well. GL with the new facility!

We moved when DD was just over a year, and her old daycare school had her still in cribs (they transition to cot at 1.5yo).

DD's new daycare school used cots, and as PP's mentioned my DD had no trouble transitioning to the cot.  She loves it! I think she felt like a big girl, and having all the other kids doing it made her want to do it.

    GL at the new place!

  • DD started daycare at 2.5 yrs old.  She needed to be around other kids her age to round her learning.  She had two moms and it was making her selfish.  The naps went ok.  They play soothing music that makes them want to go to sleep.  It took her a day or so to have to deal with not sleeping in underwear and keeping her shoes on.  She has taken VERY well to it and now loves it.  We don't call it daycare to her we call it school.  She LOVES school.

  • DD started daycare at 2 as well. I was worried about the cots too, but she transition ok. Granted, she didn't nap there for the first 4 or 5 times (but she went twice a week, so she made up for those days by napping at home the next day). After that, she did wonderfully with the cots. If you have time before he starts officially, maybe try moving his naptime down a bit. If not, give him a week or two, he'll get used to it. Good luck!

Kiddo started daycare at 2 1/2.  She still sleeps in a crib at home, and she had no problem sleeping on a mat.  She doesn't nap at daycare every day, but she doesn't nap at home every day either.  When she doesn't fall asleep, she stays on the mat for 1/2 hour until she can get up (daycare rule).  I took her to Target, and she picked out a special Thomas blanket to use at nap time at daycare.  She sees the other kids on mats at daycare (we call it preschool), and she is proud to do the same, because she is a big girl too

  • DS started dc at 2yrs 2 months. He had no trouble napping on the nap. It's almost like they do what everyone else is doing. There are days he won't nap (we arrive at 1pm) so nap time has already started. But they have their ways to get him to lay down. He has blossomed verbally and socially. Best decision we ever made! GL
