Pre-workout supplements?

Hi all, I hadn't thought about this much until DH walked in earlier with a bag full of workout supplements. He is a workout finatic and has taken numerous types of supplements. My only worry is that it will affect his fertility.

He is currently taking Napalm- Muscle Warfare, Cullucor HD, CLA, and a protien powder. The protein is whey, not soy, so that one should actually be helpful.

Do you know if any of these would hurt his fertility? Any insight would be awesome. TIA!

Also, would it benefit me to drink the protein shakes as well?

Re: Pre-workout supplements?

  • I don't really know if any of these would hinder fertility, but I am sure you can google them to see if any of them have that sort of side effect's. My first thought to hinder fertility is steroid ect.. anything that follow's that route if not I would say it should be fine.

When me and my husband where TTC are fourth(there is 11 yrs between my last two) once we both started eating right and excercising, supplement's included I think it helped within five months of changing habit's and 13 month's of hard core TTC I got pregnant. HTH! Good luck!

Edit to add: Protein Supplement's are not bad for you I would not use soy of course if TTC, but this could put weight on you if you are not exercising, it is to feed muscle to get larger if that is what you are looking for, then fine, I personally only take the powder on occasion when I am to lazy to fix a meal and I need it after I workout. Make sure it has a low amount of sugar the one we use is Whey and has 2gms of sugar.

  • They won't necessarily hinder his fertility. The problem with supplements like those are that they're not well regulated and subject to cross contamination because they're often made on same equipment as other products that could affect fertility.

My DH works out a lot and used to take a bunch of supplements. When we were diagnosed with Male Factor Infertility, the doctor told him to stop taking all workout supplements because they might have an impact.

He still uses protein, but we get a plant-based protein powder which is a lot more strictly controlled than the huge buckets of whey or soy protein. I would say that the protein would be helpful for you if you're working out, too. But generally, as long as you're not a vegetarian you'd get adequate protein from your diet (again- assuming you're not working out a lot). It's more important for you to focus on prenatal vitamins and eating a healthy diet.
