  • thats how much my 8 week old twins are taing. the doc said Im over feeding. One of them tries to stuff there face and go past that( i make 8 oz bottles and split them between the two) Im not going to listen to my kid cry cuz they are still hungry. Babies will be chunky and thats ok. My smaller twin will turn away when she doesnt want more so i say feed your baby and let them drink what they want.

My 10 week old is taking 5 oz/feeding.  4 doesn't seem like too much.  It also depends on how many feedings they get per day.

  • I feel the same way. She turns away or start spitting it out if she doesn't want anymore.  I was even considering putting cereal in two (am & pm) of them because she eats really every two hrs., but sometimes we can stretch it to 3 hrs

  • Haven't done the cereal yet thou. I read in American baby or parents that no baby regardless of age or size should get no more than 32oz in a 24 hr period.

  • LO's weight mulitplied by 2.5 will give you a rough estimate of how many ounces per day he needs.  DS is 12 weeks and takes 4 or 5 six ounce bottles per day.  He STTN on most nights so all his feedings are generally between 5am-8pm or so.

  • No I think that's fine.

My LO is primarily breastfeed, but that's about how much he takes.  When he went to the LC @ 2wks and 3 wks he was eating that much from me according to her scale.  We've been bottle feeding him once a day or so, and generally he eats 3-4 oz of expressed milk.  Once he ate 6 oz and another time 7 oz (I was amazed)  another time he only wanted 2.5 oz.

I figure if they are happy afterwards they are fine.

  • nope it is not to much, My LO is going to be 10 weeks tomorrow, she consistantly takes 4 ozs every 2-3 hours, even at night. About 1-2 times a day she will take 5 ozs and last night she drank 6ozs in the middle of the night!!!! I was shocked

I was instructed to watch her intake by our pedi because she wasnt gaining...now that I offer her the bottle every 2-3 hours nomatter what she is eatting sooo much more. seems like alot but the doctor said they want her consistantly drinking 4-5 ozs by 3 months and 5-6ozs by 4 months. So we are right on target.

Dont worry if baby is eatting more...I would only worry if LO is eatting less. follow their lead.

  • I'm not sure if its different for FF babies, but I read that for BF babies, 24oz is the "correct" average daily intake for ages 1-6 months (the range listed was like 22-30oz).  So depending on how often your baby is eating, 4 doesn't sound like too much... I would say if he takes the whole bottle, doesn't spit a bunch of it up, and your pediatrician isn't concerned about his weight, follow his cues and give him the 4!

  • At our 2 month apt, pedi said DS should be up to 5-6 oz per feeding.  I asked if it was formula or breastmilk b/c DS is on both, and he said it would be the same.  However, we've found that DS does fine with 4 oz. of breast milk or 5 oz. of formula.  He'll be 12 weeks tomorrow.

  • My LO usually drinks 4oz every 3 hours while he is awake..sometimes he feeds every 2 hours some days and wants as much as 6oz...I just follow his lead

  • My DS will often drink 6 oz at a feeding, and averages bran 35-40 oz a day. He's a big boy; 90% for weight and 95% for height, but the nurses at our pedi's office say they love seeing them "like this" (which I think they mean "chubby"), and the pedi seems to think he's doing great.

Since he was not gaining well when BFing (low supply) and we were doing weight checks twice a week, I couldn't be happier that he's a chunky monkey now. It's actually a relief.

I don't know about American Baby or Parents saying that no child regardless of age or size should have more than 32 oz in a 24 hour period. Seems like a pretty broad and sweeping statement, which I tend not to put much stock into.

3 months seems a little early to be worried about overeating and weight. I know we have a childhood obesity epidemic in America, but at this age, all an LO is getting Is BM or formula. It's not like their downing French fries and orange soda and playing video games or anything. And with BM, I would think doctors would say the more the better, because of all the nutrients, antibodies, protective qualities, etc.

Not a criticism of the OP, btw. You're just asking a question, which is what these. Lars's are for. Just a general, somewhat-related comment.
