Anybody going dairy free?

DS has reflux and some green poop. My entire family suffers from reflux, so I'm not too surprised. The pedi put him on Zantac and suggested I cut out obvious dairy (cheese, milk, yogurt, butter, etc.)

Unfortunately, I have an oversupply issue, so that and the resulting foremilk/hindmilk imbalance could also be causing these issues.

Just seeing if anyone else is going through something similar. I'm at a week now of eliminating obvious dairy, but not things like whey/casein yet.

ETA: Just got off the phone with the pedi and he wants to switch to Prevacid. So now we're trying that, and continuing my obvious dairy elimination. I'll move to hidden dairy if we don't see improvement with the Prevacid in 10 days or so.

Re: Anybody going dairy free?

  • Yes, I'm completely dairy free again.  DS reacted to dairy from the beginning.  Both of my other kids are dairy protein intolerant still, so it wasn't surprising.

  • I'm curious as to how you guys knew there was something "wrong"? DD almost always kicks, grunts, and cries out at least once per feeding (EBF), which makes me believe my milk is giving her gas. The AM feeding seems to be good though, maybe because whatever I ate is now out of my milk?

That sounds like normal gas to me.  it's common for them to have trouble with gas and burping at this stage too.  DS had green mucous mixed in with his meconium in the hospital, he also broke out in red bumps on his face after getting a formula supplement in the hospital, which is a tell tale sign in my kids.  If I haven't been really careful about what I eat, he gets green mucousy poo.

  • My pedi told me to cut Dairy out at our Tuesday appointment. She didn't say how long it would take to show improvement. I read two to three weeks. She didn't mention medicating him yet so I guess I just have to wait and see.

  • Yes. Again. All hidden dairy. It feels harder this time, probably because I got a taste of the good life once DD weaned a year ago.

Blood/mucus in the poop is how it presented with #1 and it was the same with this lo. ArchIng of the back and fighting the breast/going bsc during feedings was another sign.

We didn't start noticing green poo until later, around 2.5 weeks. It was about the same time we picked up on my oversupply issues. I'm not entirely convinced that we have a milk protein intolerance at this point, b/c DS can have very normal poo, and then a day of green. He is pretty gassy, and definitely has reflux, but like I said...I was a horrible reflux baby, as were the rest of my family members.

FWIW, the AM feeding is the one DS fights the most. My theory is he's in pain from refluxing all night :( He sleeps on an incline, but still...

Sorry :( We've got the arching...but not necessarily during feedings. Just more througout the day. He only goes bsc during the AM feeding.

Like I said, we don't always have poo issues. Just sometimes.

    This is so frustrating!

I've been dairy free for 3 days now.  Her poop has a green tint still, but it is mostly yellow.  Spitting up has decreased, but I seriously miss my pizza.  Our ped said to give her mylanta if she got real fussy and was arching her back a bunch.

  • how do you know if it's reflux, oversupply or dairy?

reflux has no green poops, right? but oversupply and dairy do? how do you differentiate? what if it's both?

I've cut out all dairy as well.  LO is very gassy and fussy, has had some green poops (well green flecks in yellow poop) and seems to have painful cramps.  I'm willing to try anything so I cut out all dairy.  I'm sensitive to cow's milk so he probably is too.  I haven't seen any improvment yet but it's only been a few days.
