C-sections

Ability to lift

I don't follow up with my OB until my 6 week appointment which is actually scheduled at 7.5 weeks because they are busy otherwise I would ask them this question...

How long after c-section was it before you started lifting heavier weights such as LO in infant carseat?  I don't want to push it but I REALLY want to start getting out.

Re: Ability to lift

  • I waited a long time to lift the seat. I just left the seat in the car and put LO in it that way.  No reason you have to lift the seat to be able to leave the house.

That's what I was thinking but DH thought it would be difficult getting her in and out sideways like that.  And when you get to your destination, are you baby wearing to get her around?  I have a Moby but can't seem to get the hang of it.

This. the seat never leaves the car. So far I've always had someone with me and just carried him in my arms but I'm practicing with the Moby so I can start wearing him while I"m out.

  • I'm the opposite, my seat never stays in the car.  Started carrying him about 3 weeks PP (i had to bring him with me for DD daycare drop offs).

This.  I could've done it earlier but my husband was home so I took advantage of that.

This, but I try to limit trips a bit so that I'm not lifting it in and out all day and I put it right into the snap n go instead of carrying it.  This week (4wPP) I'm much less sore  from carrying the car seat.

Yes, I did a lot of babywearing. I always tied the Moby on before I left home, so I'd just have to put DD in and maybe adjust a bit at my destination. I was really intimidated by the Moby at first, but I just kept trying...then I wore DD almost constantly until she was 6 months old and wanted to be down on the ground. Little miss independent!

  • I waited until I had my 6 week follow up. Dr said it was normal life, so that's what I did...

  • My OB had me follow-up at 2wks since I had a c/s to make sure there was no infection forming and the scar was healing well (I also delivered at a military hospital that was not nearly as busy as most OB practices). I was told not to drive or lift until then, then I know I was released to drive, but I don't remember if I was lifting the carseat at that point... I must have b/c I know I left the house at some point by myself and I FOR SURE didn't wear him at that point. I could never get the hang of the Moby wrap and he was too little for the Bjorn. This time around I will be getting either a Boba or an Ergo so I can wear him/her earlier.

ETA: But I def wasn't carrying that carseat around. He was behind my passenger seat in the back (so right by the door) and the carrier went right into the stroller or shopping cart.

  • Thank you so much for all the responses!

I think I wasn't clear in my original post...I wouldn't be carrying the carseat around everywhere, just from the house into the car and then out of the car into the stroller and vice versa.  My husband is just very protective of me and I do tend to overdo things if left to my own devices so I didn't want to be doing this so soon if it wasn't a good idea.  I do realize that those with a RCS have little ones and are doing WAY more things but I don't want to do anything that will compromise my recovery.
