High-Risk Pregnancy

Going through a bone issues diagnosis. Anyone w/ this experience?

Hi guys,

We just had our first ultrasound at 18 weeks (no prior screening since we are both low-risk genetics-wise as far as we know).  We found out that kiddo has some substantial-looking bone issues ("bone dysplasia".  We were lucky enough to get into a high-risk prenatal division at a very good hospital the same day, and to have a second ultrasound and an amnio, too.

Until we know more, the range of possible outcomes is very wide.   It could be fatal (e.g. if the rib cage cannot support the lungs adequately), or just be that our kiddo is a Little Person.  He's running about 2/3 the size of most 18 week olds, has some curvature in his limbs, and the way the backs of the ribs are growing looks different -- like they are not curving backwards towards the spine quite enough (splayed out instead).  Hands and feet look very good though, and brain and organs look good!  It was a hard day for us, but we enjoyed watching him swim his pants off during the multiple ultrasounds, and we're trying to keep cool until we know exactly what's up.

Would be great to hear from any of you who have gone through diagnosing bone dysplasia and/or who are raising a kiddo with bone issues.

 Thank you :-)

  • Thanks for viewing.  FYI I received some advice from the Special Needs moms, if anyone else is going through something similar or has questions!
