Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Could it be reflux?

We just switched my 17week old to formula this past week, he was efb.  However, I still nurse in the a.m.  After the majority of his feedings he has a little split up, however there are sometimes when he starts to cough and then just looses it all  and sometimes it's a good 2 hours after he eats.  He has had a slight cough since the switch, no extra fussiness, and no rash....so I think the allergy question is out??? Could it be reflux??

Re: Could it be reflux?

  • Doubt it.  Is he unhappy about it?  DS was a reflux baby and spit up a ton and was never happy.  DD spits up a fair amount, but she's never unhappy about it.  She just opens her mouth and it comes out.

  • My baby has always been a "spitter upper" - both on BM and formula. I expressed concern to my Pedi, and he said as long as "the spit up is not projectile, or discolored, and baby isn't fussy and/or uncomfortable when he eats, and he's gaining enough weight" not to worry. Because they are babies, the valve in their esophagus is still learning how to work properly, so this can cause your baby to spit up alot since they can't control it. It's not an acid problem in their tummy, which is reflux, it's mechanical.  He is a very happy baby when he eats, just spits up alot so he gets to wear a bib whenever he eats!  Again, this is just my personal experience, good luck!

  • My son has reflux and when it's bothering him, he arches his back and screams and will not eat, even if he is super hungry.  He is really fussy when it is bothering him too.  So, it doesn't sound like reflux to me.  I do wonder though if he is eating too much?  Or too fast?  My first son did that, and he didn't have reflux... he just ate too fast... we had to make him take some breaks during his feedings.

  • Thanks so much everyone! We go to his ped next week, he doesn't projectile vomit all the times, just sometimes, especially after he has these little coughing attacks. Has putting cereal in the bottle helped anyone?

  • Dr. Frongizilla said that commonly known as heartburn, acid reflux can cause burning in the esophagus and a sour tasted in the back of the throat. If left untreated it can cause scarring of the esophagus. You could put your symptoms on here and ask him your self! Hope your LO feels better
