DS is a week and 10 mths old. He also has an milk intolerance.
I am pumping twice at work, and bf'ing in the am and pm.
My supply is tanking and rather quickly. Obviously we are approaching a cross roads and have to make a decision soon.
I called my pedi's office and the nurse called me back. She is new and I didn't get a very good feeling about her on our last visit. Anyway, I told her all of the above information and she said not to worry about it and that it was "natural" at a year for babies to not be interested in nursing. When I pressed her more about how much a 10 mth old baby "should" be getting, she didn't give me a clear answer. Basically what I got from her was that since DS was doing well with solids, I could start weaning him from bm.
But the more I think about it - my supply is tanking. That is not DS's decision, kwim??
Does this sound right? "Should" 10 mth old babies be getting x amount of bm OR formula?
And that is the other issue - I can't just supplement with WCM b/c of his dairy intolerance. I have absolutely no idea about the nutritional value of soy/almond/ect milk. Is this even an alternative? I am NOT against formula. ...... I just don't know what I'm "supposed" to be giving DS, or how this whole weaning process is "supposed" to be going. Sigh.
Thoughts? Advice? TIA!
Re: Does this sound right? Bf'ing and weaning related also dairy issues
If you aren't getting good BFing advise from your doctor's office, I would consider talking to a LC. I know one in my area is much more knowledgeable about all things boob and my son's pedi is kind of a formula pusher when she doesn't have a decent answer.
If you are open to seeing one via skype, I totally recommend Jen at Milkalicious (milkalicious.com). She really helped me when DS was just starting to at-breast feed at 8 weeks.
I like the advice on Alphamom and Kellymom and Wholesome Baby on this topic. Those recommendations are to supplement with formula until 12 months if the BM supply can't keep up. I have been doing that and don't plan to introduce WCM until 12 months (or for you, introducing a milk product that isn't allergenic). The recommendation for how much BM/formula/combo at 10 months is pretty all over the map. I think mine get about 25-30oz a day through a combination of nursing, expressed milk, and formula.
At 12 months I'm going to start replacing some BM/formula with WCM. But remember that milk is a beverage, not a meal like BM/formula is. So the solid food intake has to increase to compensate.
It's definitely all very confusing! I figure the babies will let me know if they're still hungry/thirsty, so that's giving me some comfort.
Good luck!
I was dealing with supply issues and DD is allergic to cow's milk. I was told we can give her soy or coconut milk at a year. I worked to get my supply up in the meantime - more water, fenugreek tea, lactation cookies, pumping, and eating a bit more. So far so good. I just need to last 2 more months...
I agree that you should seek out an LC if you're not getting the answers you want. Can you go to La Leche League meetings? Those ladies are very helpful. You might be able to e-mail your local chapter for advice if you can't go to meetings.
I hope I can be of some help.
My son is MSPI and was exclusively breastfed. My supply was a struggle, but after getting KU, it tanked (4oz a day). I had talked with our pedi at DS 9mo appt about what to supplement with. We had already tried several formulas and were at the point of going to Neocate/Elecare. She said if he were younger, she would never consider anything but Formula, but the likelihood of him drinking the Neocate/Elecare is slim at this point. She stated tha babies who start on it young do fine, but those that transition from BM later in the game struggle because it is not as sweet and frankly is rather disgusting in comparison. She said at almost 10 months, with a balanced diet rich in healthy fats, it was fine to supplement with almond milk. Then we we found out I was KU and when I called and spoke with the nurse she was absolutely clueless. Our pedi was out of the office for a week and I said I would wait to talk to her. She gave us the go ahead to give him 100% almond milk, but to not give him more than 16-20oz a day and the other fluids should be water and no more than 4oz of juice a day.
We also have to give him Poly Vi Sol with Iron. It smells horrid, but he takes it like a champ. We give it to him straight because mixing it in something makes everything you mix it with taste bad. To make sure that he is getting enough fats, he eats fish 3x a week and we use olive oil and avacado frequently. He has been on Almond Milk for 2 weeks without breastmilk and is doing fine.
