Is this carpal tunnel?

Morning all!

I had pregnancy-induced carpal tunnel for the last three weeks of my pregnancy.  My right hand had tingling/numbness in 2 1/2 fingers and I had some wrist soreness in my left hand.  After delivering my beautiful baby girl, my right hand slowly started getting better.  The tingling/numbness was completely gone within four weeks.

Now, however, I have wrist pain in BOTH wrists.  It's almost as if there is a bone in my wrist that it 'catching' on another bone.  I really seem to notice it when I lift DD out of our her crib.  The pain gets so bad I'm afraid I'm going to drop her.  I initially thought it would eventually go away like the numbness did, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Anyone else have any problems with their wrists like this and how long did it take before they were back to normal?

Thanks!!

Re: Is this carpal tunnel?

  • My wrist was getting sore from holding DS with one arm while I tried to do things around the house. Maybe that is making yours worse?

  • Is it just along the same line as your thumb?  try tucking your thumb under the rest of your fingers and bend your wrist towards the direction of your pinky.  Does that hurt like hell????  Then it's tendonitis.  I have it in both wrists now.  I'm pretty sure that its mostly come from supporting his head during nursing, and then the constant lifting, etc.

Some days its unbearable and doing certain tasks feel next to impossible sometimes.  I haven't been to the dr yet, but my H really wants me to.  Thing is, the treatment for tendonitis is immobilization and anti-inflammatories, immobilization isn't really an option when you have a 7 week old.

  • I have this, too. I believe it's "mommy thumb", technically called De Quervain's tendinitis. You get it from lifting baby from under their armpits with your thumb and pointer fingers. It's so painful! I may see my doc to see what I can do to fix it. Feel better!

This is what it sounds like to me. I don't have it now, but I had it a few years ago (from repeatedly lifting my opened laptop with one hand from the coffee table to the couch). It was really painful but mine went away. I had to wear a brace for awhile though.

  • I suffer from DeQuervain's syndrome. I had 2 cortisone injections in the last year and a half after the birth of my son.  Now, since my daughter's birth my left wrist is starting to act up again and the area is becoming atrophied.  Wearing a wrist brace with thumb immobilizer is helpful when not needing to use that side and cold water soaks feel good, but I am likely going to see my orthopod again to make a plan on what to do next.  He mentionned a carpal tunnel type surgery could be done after this pregnancy if the last injection didn't make it all better.  Go to have your wrists looked at by a doctor,  Cortisone might help you for awhile like me and possibly it may be all you need completely.
