Pain Med for a C-Section

Does any one know what the pain medicine of choice is for a section recovery?  I have never really had reason to take pain medicine, but have tried perkocet and darvocet for minor things.  They made me totally sick.  Any advice on the pain meds?  I have heard of some people just using prescription level motrin.

  • I took Darvocet for 48 hours and then just Motrin.

  • At my hospital you get Morphine immediately after the C-section but it's usually only allowed for 24 hrs. After that you get Tylenol 3s and Advil. Hope this helps.

p.s. If they ask you in the operating room whether you want something called an epi-morph say "hell yes!". I turned it down and apparently almost everyone gets it. GL

  • I think it depends on your level of pain tolerance and your doctor.  Some people just take plain old Tylenol, others get Percocet and other drugs.
  • i don't see anything wrong with telling your doc those things upset your stomach and asking for something else.  hydrocodone, darvocet, percocet, tylenol with codeine, etc. are all pretty similar drugs if you end up needing a narcotic pain killer (and from what i've been told, most women do for at least a day).
  • i used percoset- they gave me a FULL bottle to take home, too. yikes.

  • Percocet makes me really sick too. After my section I was given morphine (but I might have been an exception since I felt alot during the closure of my section) I then asked for vicodine. Have you ever tried that? For some reason that didn't make me sick like Percocet has before with me.

  • I never took any after either of my c-sections (I have really good recoveries and a HIGH tolerance for pain). But, percocet was offered both times.

  • I was given a prescription for Hydro??? and I think I filled it - but I never used it.  I was never really in pain now that I think of it.  As a matter of fact after the C-Section - they wanted me to get up and walk around to help move the gas build up from my intestines being exposed.  But I remember (kind of foggy) I told them I would do it in the morning.

The next morning I was helped up - I remember putting my bed in a comfortable postion - and then I was up and walking around - mind you slowly - but moving....but I was never in serious pain where I needed something....
