Hitting...

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is anyone else having a problem with LO hitting and biting?? This all started the other day...we were going to my doctor appointment when Connor started to smack me in the face. I told him no, he giggled and kept on hitting so I handed him off to DH. In the waiting room he wanted to sit with me. He was on my lap gave me a kiss then bit my eyebrow. He's tried to bite our fingers before but not our faces. I'm not sure what to do. Yesterday he smacked my grandma while we were at her house. I'm not sure how to stop this - when I say no he just laughs and keeps it up. Any suggestions on what to do??

Re: Hitting...

  • My LO does this too. His pedi said when he does this to firmly tell him no and then put him down. That way he will associate his hitting with being put down or in pack in play or whatever. I haven't tried it so I dont know how well it works.

  • Lexi understands the word "gentle" said in a soothing voice (we've been saying it forever since she loves to pet the kitties and we've had to teach her how to do it nicely), so when she smacks at us, I take her hand and touch my face softly and say "gentle, gentle" and I can feel her calm down and touch me nicely. The other day I saw her smack a friend's little boy and I just said "gentle" and she immediately relaxed her arm and then touched him softly on the head.

She has started to bite down a few times while giving me slobber kisses too, but you can tell she kind of knows its wrong bc she does it really slowly like she's waiting for a reaction. Before she bites all the way down I just say "no bite" and pull her away.

  • DD has been doing this and when I firmly tell her no she laughs like it's the funniest thing....  So I usually tell her no again and if she continues to laugh I sit her on the playmat and tell her no again, she's usually pissed at this point and starts crying.  We've been practicing "gentle touching" but I think it's going to take a while.
  • Thanks ladies!!!! He knows gentle...we've used that for some time when he's playing with the dogs. I'll have to try gentle more with us too. And I will start putting him down when he's hitting and not listening. I just don't want hom to behave like this with others or at DC.
