How do I get her to to go back to her bed?

DD had some serious constipation issues and when her belly was really hurting her we got in the habit of letting her fall asleep in our bed then transferring her to her bed later.  Not a great habit, I knew it would be a problem later - but honestly at the time she was so uncomfortable I didn't care - anything that could help over the course of the past MONTH I was game for.

Now that she is feeling better I would like her back in her bed at bedtime.  How do I accomplish this?  She screams and runs to our room when we try.  When we put her in there and hug her and say night night, she sits up in her bed and screams - which keeps her twin brother awake down the hall.  I have tried telling her I will sit with her, come back in 10 minutes, she can "read", etc... nothing has worked so far.

What have you done that has worked?  What should I try?

TIA

Re: How do I get her to to go back to her bed?

  • If she's in a big enough bed I'd say lay with her in her bed and scratch her back, whatever, until she gets used to falling asleep in her own bed again.  Or - sit there with her and scratch or rub her back even while she's screaming - until she settles down and goes to sleep.  Might be a crazy few nights but should hopefully get her back where you want her.  Or keep doing what you've been doing .. my kid sleeps with us every night but we're OK with it.  Don't feel bad for being compassionate to her when she was sick though! You did the right thing, even if now you have to make some changes.

  • We just went through this. Our kids sleep in our room, but in thier own cribs. Yes, we have our bed and two cribs in one room. When we moved I had the cribs put in thier rooms. DS could care less where we put his bed, but DD was scared. The day we moved she kept asking to go home. Since their beds were in their rooms I let her sleep with us.

A week later when I finally moves her crib she refused to sleep in it. Before moving she was great about going to bed and naps. Do, I started waiting for her to pass out and the putting her in her crib. When she'd wake in the night and cry I'd get her up and we'd sit on the couch in the dark until she either passed out again or agreed to goto her own bed when asked. It only took about three days and she's back to bed.

We are now back to having both kids and both kids in our room.  Better than in the bed for us.
