Cloth Diapering

International Flight...CD??

Have any of you done CDs on an international flight? I am planning to use disposables for the flight home (baby will be 4-6 weeks) due to the length (25-30hours) and then start CD when I get to the US.

  • I absolutely just didn't bother and used disposables for when I took my youngest to England.  I am pretty hardcore about CDing, but there are limits to my sanity (and I had nowhere to wash when I got there, so they would have been sitting around for over 2 weeks :S

  • Not a chance.  Since I have it, and my youngest is allergic to traditional disposables, I would be using Flip covers with disposable inserts.

  • I think my main issue would be space. Enough cloth to last you that long would take up way more of your carry-on space than disposables would. With all of the other supplies that a newborn will need, I would save the room and use disposables.

  • not a chance would I do that.

  • I did. We took the kids to China a few months ago. It was about 24 hours from door to door, if I remember right -- Dallas-Chicago-Shanghai on the way out, Shanghai-Tokyo-Dallas on the way home. DS was just shy of 2 and still in diapers.

I brought two Best Bottoms covers (wanted to bring more but couldn't find them at home?!), a bunch of extra BB inserts, and a couple of pockets, maybe 2 or 3? Along with a large wetbag. Space was no problem. We were bringing an extra rollaboard suitcase anyway, to hold extra toys, etc. for the kids, so I put a few diapers in the diaper bag for easy access and the rest in the suitcase.

The biggest problem on the trip out was that I couldn't find all the extra BB inserts! I discovered this with about 10 hrs to go on the Chicago-Shanghai leg Indifferent I ended up sticking maxi pads from the lavatory inside the BB covers to get him through! Hey, it worked! Then, after we'd been in Shanghai for a week, I found the extra inserts in the pocket of the rollaboard suitcase, exactly where I thought I had put them. Duhhhhhhh...

On the trip back, I put in the extra inserts, I made sure I knew where they were, and it was a breeze Smile

We did have laundry while in China -- otherwise, I would've done disposables. I'm glad cloth worked out though, because diapers in China were about $40 for a jumbo pack (36 diapers) of Huggies? ouch.

  • Well what you're saying about China is worth thinking about!! How do I get to know all the lingo for CD??????? A lot of the words you used I am unfamiliar with! lol

I also would need to think about the shipping costs for sending the CDs over here from the US and then the luggage space to take them back again. Except either way I would have to have room for them on the return flight...Hmmm.. I might still have them sent here so DH and I get used to CD but use the disposable on the plane...

I like them for traveling because they take up less space, because you can get a couple of diaper changes out of one cover and a few extra inserts. In theory, at least. One problem (especially with a young baby like you're talking about) is that if the baby poops (which newborns do all.the.time), it usually gets on the cover. So then, you have a dirty cover, and extra inserts with nothing to put them in Smile

Pockets: These are a cover with a pocket that you slip an absorbent insert into. I use mostly BumGenius: https://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=98&products_id=2424. But there are lots of options.

As for shipping, where are you located? Is buying locally (or at least, buying closer than the USA) an option at all?

  • I live in Botswana. I'll have to see if there are any companies in South Africa. I can drive down there. Otherwise they will have to come in a package from my parents from the states!
