Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How long does your LO sleep? (Also on January 2012 Board)

My LO is 16 weeks old and is very unpredictable with how much he will sleep at night. It's usually anywhere from 3 to 5 1/2 hours in a row. Twice it was 7 1/2 hours which was totally random - I wish I knew what made him do that! I'm not complaining because I don't think that amount of time is too bad plus he is a good napper, but I did want to know what other babies around this age are doing. The baby's first year book I have says they sleep 8-12 hours in a row which seems like a lot to me. I'm going to start reading a sleep book but until then was wondering what everyone else's LO was doing. Thanks!

  • 12 hours. That's who much little babies at this age need.

My DD sleeps 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., and takes 3 naps per day, anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours each. Lots of sleeping is happening when that much growth is going on! Wait until your baby is 1, then you'll be able to really see all the changes that happened in a year!

We get about 9-9.5 hours, and then they'll usually go down for 2-3 hours more (or as long as they can until we have to leave if it's during the week).  If we could get them to bed at 8:30pm-ish then H and I would get to STTN (we would have to get them up by about 5:45 to get them both fed before we had to leave), but they like to go to bed between 7-7:30 so they're usually up around 4:30.

ETA - They JUST started sleeping this well consistently in the past week or so.  When I started work 3 weeks ago they were up twice a night and sleeping anywhere from 4-7 hours at a stretch.  We've been increasing what they eat and have been getting longer stretches.  We started with just trying to increase their bedtime bottles and when they took that well and started skipping a feeding we increased the daytime bottles to try to make up what they were missing.

DD is sleep by 930ish lately and I wake her at about 630a to get dress for Daycare. On weekends she goes down about the same time and will sleep til about 9-10am.

I'd say the longest I get out of DD is 8-9 hours, but not consistently.  She's usually down for the night by 9 and will wake up in the 4 or 5 oclock hour, I'll give her a short feeding and she'll go back to sleep until I wake her up for the day at 7.

I've had my longest stretches when I give her a dream feed before I go to bed.

  • DS is also 16 weeks, and he goes down at 8pm... feeds at 4am, then back to sleep unitl 8 sometimes 8:30! His feeding is light and i'm sure he would be ok without it. But i'm not ready to let him cry it out if he might still be a little hungry. He naps 3 times during the day AM nap about 45 min to an hr, afternoon 2-3 hrs, evening nap is 45 min.

  • Wow everyone's LO is sleeping way more hours in a row than mine. What could I be doing wrong? I did try the dream feed a few times and he still woke up after 3 hours from that to eat again. Cluster feeding has made him sleep an extra hour or so but sometimes he doesn't want to cluster feed. Anything else I can do (before I read this whole sleep book for suggestions)?

  • My LO is a bit younger than yours but she is sleeping more like yours.  You are not alone!  She had three 7 hour stretches in a row last week and even though I knew better than to get my hopes up, I did...it was just a fluke.  We went weeks with getting a 5-6 hr stretch then the 7-hr, now back to 3-4.  We haven't changed anything in her routine either.  No suggestions unfortunately, just wanted to share that you are not alone!  :)

  • Same as the last 2 pp! I am so tired! LOL DS sleeps for about 5 hours, nurses and then is back up in a couple of hours. And thats a good night! 3 nights in a row he slept longer and than bam back to being awake every few hours. I keep hoping it gets better soon... :D
  • Every baby is different. My DS usually only sleeps 3-4 hours for his longest stretch as well. He was giving me a 5-6 hour stretch for a couple weeks but I think his teeth are bothering him. He naps well during the day and is thriving and I'm pretty  against sleep training at this age so we are just going with it for now.

I have several friends who's one year olds still don't STTN and never have. I just keep telling  myself I will sleep again eventually!  Good luck to you.

  • Yes, every baby is different. Both of my babies started sleeping way longer when I stopped breastfeeding at 6 months with DD and at 4 months with DS. I think formula is just more filling? Also, DS is a little older than your baby and is eating solids, too. I think he's just way more satisfied with food when he goes to bed at night.
